However, the reel -type is not as versatile
as the rotary lawn mowers and is usually
more expensive initially and more costly to•
maintain.
The hand -operated reel -type mower is
ideal for small lawns. It will give a good
cut, save gas and provide exercise.
The rotary lawn mower used by most
homeowners cuts by the sickle -like impact
of a whirling blade. This action bashes the
grass off and causes the top of the blade to
turn brown. Because of this, rotary lawn
mowers are best used for grass control,
rather than for lawn appearance.
Whatever type of lawn mower you
select, get a good quality machine to make
mowing as pleasurable as possible.
Radishes brighten
summer meals
The cool greens in a fresh summer salad
come alive when the crisp texture, tangy
flavor and vibrant color of radishes is
added. These perky little vegetables are
also great on their own, with a favorite dip,
as a garnish for cold meats or salad plates,
or as appetizers.
Food specialists at the Ontario Food
Council, Ministry of Agriculture and Food,
say that Ontario radishes generally are
available from the end of May through the
summer until frost. There are several
shapes and varieties of radishes: round,
oval, oblong and long or icicle shape, and a
range of colors: red, white and black. The
flavors vary from mild to strong or
pungent. The most common and popular
type of radish is the red glaurr or round
variety. It usually is found on produce
counters. The other varieties may be found
in specialty fruit and vegetable stores or
farmers' markets. When you come across
any of these different types of radishes,
why not buy some and add color and flavor
variety to your summer meals. They'll add
zip and crunch to the foods you serve.
Look for radishes that are smooth, crisp
and firm, not wilted, spongy, or cut or
broken. Radishes may be bunched -tied
together around the full length tops, or
topped -tops removed, and packaged in
plastic bags.
Radishes keep better if their tops are
removed. They should be placed in a
perforated plastic bag in the refrigerator
crisper. Use them within one week. The
radish tops may be cooked and served like
other greens.
