The Rural Voice, 1978-06, Page 25If you are a farmer, the program could be
useful to you in several ways. It could help
offset the cost of additional employees if
you have been thinking of expanding your
operation but weren't sure whether it was
an economic proposition at the present
time. It could help you hire people to get
additional work done around the farm. Or
the program could help you take life a little
easier by perhaps hiring your first
employee.
Farmers taking advantage of the
program must recruit their new employees
through a Canada Employment Centre or
Canada Farm Labour Pool.
Only persons who have been unemploy-
ed and registered with one of these offices
for eight weeks or more are eligible for
employment under the program. Employ-
ees cannot be relatives of the employer,
and the job cannot already be subsidized
through another federal, provincial or
municipal government employment pro-
gram.
For more information on the program,
farmers should contact their Canada
Employment Centre or Canada Farm
Labour Pool.
Shake up those
herbicides
Farmers should give their 2, 4-D amine ,
herbicides a shake-up before pouring them
into their spray tanks this summer.
Agriculture Canada's plant products
division authorities say the amine type of 2,
4-D may settle out and fall to the bottom of
the can if the chemical is stored in cold
conditions. If settling -out has occurred.
some of the chemical may be left in the
bottom of the can when the herbicide is
poured into the sprayer,' resulting in an
improper application rate.
Setting -out is a problem only with 2, 4-D
amine herbicides. The ester type of 2, 4-D
is not affected.
The plant products division is the
regulatory arm of Agriculture Canada that
controls pesticides permitted for use in
Canada. Its officials say the settling -out
process in 2, 4-D amines can begin
anywhere in the distribution chain during
cold weather. The 2. 4-D amines are often
made in the winter and may be stored or
shipped by the manufacturer under cold
conditions. The settling -out may have
started before the farmer gets the
herbicide home or may also occur in
carryover stocks held on the farm.
Labels on the herbicide cans state that
the chemical should not be stored in
temperatures below 0°C and farmers
should keep their herbicide supply in a
warm place.
Settled material can usually be reconstit-
uted with the arrival of warmer
temperatures during the spraying season.
A little bit of agitation will help to redisolve
any residual material. Because five gallon
herbicide cans are too heavy to be picked
