The Rural Voice, 1978-04, Page 40RICHARD L.OBB- AUCTIONEER-- CeIITON ONT.---- Richard Lobb found a solution to the problem of bad weather at auctions. But when a sale must be held inside and no suitable accommodation is available on the property, the barn provides a convenient solution to an otherwise serious problem. For example, the high cost of rent and interest sometimes makes it impossible to keep an estate over the winter. Besides making winter sales more convenient, the barn allows an auction to be held at night, when most people are off work. Richard's main purpose in remodelling the barn, however, is storage. Often a partial lot comes in, that is too small to warrant calling a sale, and it can be stored until another lot becomes available. "Two or three partial lots make a good sale," Richard explains. Most partial lots result when senior citizens sell their houses and move into apartments. They can take only part of their furniture with them and must sell the rest. Other lots occur when people move long distances. The high cost of transportation and shipping makes it more economical to sell their furniture -.nd replace it when they reach their new home than to take their present furnishings with them. The importance of having a good place in which to hold a sale was shown to Richard last fall when he had an auction in the new Blyth arena. "The new facility added to the sale," he says. "It was roomy, and it made the merchandise look good." If the arena had not been rented, inclement weather could have decreased the attendance, and losses could have resulted. Thus an auction facility provides a valuable service to any community. Richard Lobb does not want his auction barn to be the only place in which he conducts sales, but it is reassuring to know he has a facility for storage and for emergency auctions. ❑ PG: 40.
