Conservation centres open in Goderich and Lucknow Two new centres to increase awareness of energy conservation needs were opened in the area in March. The two centres, located in Goderich and Lucknow are under the leadership of 1 ony McQuail, a Lucknow area farmer who has been involved in energy conservation in his own farm for several years. They are funded under Federal Department of Labour and the program is to continue until the fall. The staff comes from a wide area and includes Gerry Zurbrigg, Barb Zettler, Ian Finlayson, Joe Drennan, Pat Niblock and Bev Brown. The centres provide a good deal of information on energy saving ideas, including books on solar heated houses, greenhouses. insulation and information on such things as recovery of heat from hulk milk cooling tanks to provide an endless stream of free hot water. Mr. McQuail said he hopes the centres will become a place for an exchange of ideas, a way of putting people in contact with others who have tried conservation projects. The centre includes a bulletin board with the names of those who have experience in things such as methane gas conversion. The centres also have displays showing the basic workings of such things as solar collectors and methane conversion from manure. One of the projects Mr. McQuail says he would like to organize would be a tour of energy conservation projects to let people see what others are doing in the field. Prices set for 1978 white bean seed ' The Ontario Bean Producers Marketing Board has set the prices for white bean seed to be used for the 1978 crop. In a recent newsletter the price of No.1 foundation seed is listed at $25 per hundred weight and No. 2 certified seed at $21.50 Over the past 10 years the formula for pricing seed has remained the same. It is the pool price of commercial beans plus the premium paid to the seed producer plus the seed handle paid to the elevator to process seed. Any seed treatment is separate and additional to this formula. This formula has worked well the Board says and the seed producer has been provided with a growing market for his seed, as the commercial grower has been assured of sufficient seed at reasonable prices and has expanded his -acreage. The formula has not varied despite wide variances in commercially priced beans over different years. It is the board's hope that seed growers will act responsibly in this crucial year as Canada attempts to get MA feet back on the ground in the bean business, after the 1977 crop devastation. No. 2 foundation seed (for colour only, germination 85 percent or better) will be $24.50 and No. 2 certified seed with the same qualifications will be $21. The elevators will be responsible for designating seed that is No. 2 for colour only. That is, seed that is No. 2 either foundation or certified, with poor colour, but, better than 85 percent germination will be marked in such a way to separate it from No. 2 seed with below 85 percent germination. The elevators are aware of this responsibility. Preliminary acreage forecasts for 1978 predict an increase of seven percent in Michigan. Navy bean production is expected to top five million cwt. if an average yield is assumed for the 47,000 acres to be planted. Otte SV1e General Store 4 miles west of Clinton on Highway 4.
