The Rural Voice, 1978-04, Page 20Grain elevator act
leaves farmers
in jeopardy
The 20 -year-old Ontario Grain Elevator
Act gives farmers about as much protection
as a leaky umbrella, Otis McGregor,
secretary manager of the Ontario Soybean
Growers' Marketing Board said recently
following an elevator bankruptcy.
The Lambton farmers elevator bankrupt-
cy proved the ineffectiveness of the act he
said. The act makes farmers secured
creditors in the event of bankruptcy and
made farmers assume they were protected,
he said but in this case there was no grain
in the elevator and the farmers found
themselves unprotected. Mr. McGregor
said the act "isn't worth the paper it's
written on."
McGregor said alternatives to provide
real protection are being investigated.
A financial protection task force has
been the catalyst for a move to initiate a
farmer -funded protection plan as a form of
insurance. The province has ag4eed to
contribute $250,000.
McGregor said there have been
meetings to review the situation and to find
out what can be done to fill an obvious gap.
But he said it was shocking to be told by
government lawyers that auditors were
right in their assessment of the situation
after the Lambton bankruptcy.
Little change seen
for can crop prices
in 1978
Little price change is expected for 1978
can crop growers those attending the
annual banquet of the Huron -Perth Can
Crop Growers Association on March 17
were told.
The price of peas was settled by
arbitration and will be the same as last
year, Harry Dougall who represents the
area in negotiations told the meeting. At
the same time harvesting expenses will be
up about SI per acre and seed costs up one
cent per pound.
Dougall said corn would come under the
two -price system with $55.75 per ton being
the domestic price and $45.75 per ton for
export.
The export price will be a percentage of
the crop exported and a percentage of the
difference of $10 per ton. Chairman of the
Ontario Vegetable Growers Marketing
