OFA DIRECTORS MEETING
MAURICE BEAN
The Directors met in the Plaza II Hotel with President Peter
Hannam presiding. Two interested I.S.M.s from Huron attended
the meeting with the Directors to add support to the Huron
Resolution to be presented.
In his opening remarks President Peter Hannam reported that he
met informally, in Ottawa the previous, evening_, with Prime
Minister Trudeau, Joe Clark, U.S. Vice -President Mondale and
several cabinet ministers.
Among the concerns expressed by the OFA President was the
border blockade by U.S. cattlemen. Peter reported that he explained
how easily our markets in Canada were disrupted by actions in the
U.S. because of our much smaller markets in relation to the U.S.;
while for the same reason, Canadian actions have a much smaller
effect in the U S.
Mr. Hannam also pointed out that during the past year, Canada
had a 1.3 billion dollar deficit with the U.S. in agricultural trade!
Grant Wallace outlined the Membership position over the last
three months up to the present time; compared to last year we are in
a slightly better position, but it is important for the membership
renewals to be sent in promptly.
Correspondence - Jack Hale read a letter from Bell Telephone in
effect saying that the mileage rate for private phones has not been
raised significantly in several years; and that no change ih policy was
anticipated. They are aiming at having no more than four to a party
line.
Farm Fuel Committee Report -
A survey of Directors showed Farm Bulk gasoline prices ranged
from 83 to 91.9 cents a gallon. Self-service gas bar .prices ranged
from 78.9 to 89 cents per gallon.
The price spread between these two prices in an area, ranged from
-'/2 to 13 cents per gallon. There was only one instance where the
farm price was lower, and that was only on a "cash" basis and the
farmer owned his own tanks and pumps. The price spread generally
was four to seven cents per gallon higher for the farm bulk gasoline.
Farmers owning their own storage tanks and pumps are in a stronger
position to negotiate a price.
Corn Marketing Proposal - A meeting was held with Corn Dealers
and interest was indicated; a reply to our proposal is awaited.
Signatures are coming into head office so if anyone would like to
sign the petition to be presented to the Farm Products Marketing
Board asking for a vote of Corn Producers for a Marketing Board,
please call your regional Director of O.F.A. or sign at the County
Federation Office before February 1.
OFA manager Jack Hale announced that family memberships are
now available at $15.00 per year. This will give farm wives or other
family members, living at home full membership privileges in OFA,
except for separate mailing of Management Digest etc.
Local Research Facilities - It was announced that Huron
Federation .was setting up a Research Facility, under the
Chairmanship for O.F.A. and Huron Federation, so that it can be
used as resource information by anyone. O.F.A. recommends all
counties to consider setting up similar facilities, as this would be
convenient for the local people and lessen the work load at O.F.A.
Resolutions passed:
1 That O.F.A. approach CIAG to consider a premium reduction on
those vehicles with significant rust resistance.
2 That where inspectors condemn carcasses at killing plants,
