The Rural Voice, 1978-02, Page 8recent difficult years.
"We're going through a transition as great, if not greater,
than the one found in the industrial age," he says. People are
learning that so many of the technological changes just haven't
improved the world.
His feelings spill out in conversation about many issues. the
same feelings that spike his radio broadcasts with a special virve
that hasn't been heard on CKNX radio farm programming for
some time. It's a welcome note to most rural residents in the
station's listening area wh-1 had quietly suffered through a
de-emphasising of farm programing at the station that had even
some insiders there grumbling. The station once had a strong
reputation for its farm coverage but in the last couple of years the
post of farm director had been melded into the general news
operation meaning there was no person specializing in farming.
The quality of farm broadcasting had deteriorated to little more
than livestock reports and had brought criticism from several
farm groups in the area.
Now, thanks to the boyish enthusiasm of Cliff Robb. the good
old days of farm broadcasting may be back at CKNX. But besides
the limitations placed on himself by his health. Cliff also finds
frustration in the lack of resources that he has at a small private
station to do the kind of indepth stories he'd like. At C.B.C. his
budget was not tied to any limiting factor of income for the
station because of the public purse. At CKNX the limited
advertising revenue means a limited budget.
Still, one gets the impression that just as a stroke and a serious
operation couldn't keep Cliff Robb down. so a little thing like a
budget won't stop him from putting the station back in the
forefront of farm broadcasting. ❑
