Amish may seek help from Ombudsman ' An appeal to the Ontario Ombudsman's ' office is the likely next move for the Ontario Amish farmers fighting the Ontario Milk Marketing Board's decree to PG. 22. THE RURAL VOICE/NOVEMBER end milk shipment in cans. The Amish had a hearing before the Ontario Milk Commission on Oct. 17 seeking a special exemption on the basis that use of bulk coolers would mean the need for electricity which is against the religious views of the sect. If the next step fails, it will be the last since the Amish have said they will not challenge the ruling in the courts because it is against the nature of their community to take aggressive action. Frank Gallant, lawyer for the Ministry of Agriculture and the Milk Commission said the commission sympathized with the plight of the Amish but the interests of other milk producers and consumers must be considered too. Already many Amish have left Ontario for the U.S. seeking relaxed regulations there and more are likely to leave in future. Dry corn conditions could spoil silage Delays in harvesting silage corn due to wet weather may lead to heavier than usual spoilage of silage, at least one Agricultural Representative is warning. Harold Buck, ag. rep. for Elgin warns that because of the dried out condition of the corn, packing will be a problem. Normal moisture level is 65-70 per cent but this year is only 45-50 per cent. The dry, fluffy corn can't be as tightly packed to exclude oxygen as it must be for proper ensiling process. Present of air could lead to more spoilage.
