The Rural Voice, 1977-11, Page 15investment. Industrial milk prices have more than doubled since 1972. One of the problems of the plant today besides getting enough milk, is meeting competition from the Bruce Nuclear Power project a few miles up the road. Like many industries in the area, Pine River finds it hard to compete with the high wage scale and tries to keep its workers happy with shorter working hours and other behefits. Another problem is one that was solved back when the factory first opened but now resurfaced: what to do with the whey without causing pollution. The problem is disposed of by spreading it on the land where it enriches the soil but spreading in the winter can be a problem when it's hard to get on the fields.., The factory is looking at the possibility of building a kind of reservoir to store the whey in winter then pump it out and spread it in summer. An obvious answer is the old one, of feeding it to livestock but so far. no one has been interested and Don is surprised, especially after reading of research in Alberta that -showed feeding whey to cattle and pigs can save as much as one third of the feed bills. A cheap source of feed is being spread on the land at Pine River because no one wants it. But despite problems, Pine River Cheese factory seems determined to keep going. Fans like this writer, practically raised on Pine River cheddar cheese, can only say best of luck.
