Thomson elected as Bruce Count-_ warden
by Ron Wass
David Thomson, reeve of Brant
Township, has been elected as `head of
Bruce County. Thomson won the election,
18 - 13, over Barry Johnston, reeve of
Kinloss Township.
The new warden was elected in an
open vote at the annual warden's banquet
held in Walkerton, December 11. The
voting system saw the end of a tradition
as the next warden will be chosen by
secret ballot.
Thomson, who is serving his third terra
as reeve, has been involved in municipal
politics since 1968. Be operates a mixed,
cow -calf farm operation north of Walker-
ton with his sons. He is the eighth Brant
reeve to hold the wardenship.
In his •address, Thomson said the coun-
ty would be faced with three major
issues in the coming year, including a
seniors' study, pay equity and county
restructuring. His goal, he said, is to see
provisions made for "pre -zoned land" for
commercial and industrial development.
Industries from the Metro area are
looking to Bruce County to relocate and
expand, he said. Afterwards, he said
there is a need in the county for prezon-
ed land in order to accommodate
newcomers as quickly as possible. Other-
wise, they could be faced with waits of
two years or more, waiting for the rezon-
ed process.
David Thomson
In terms of the Saugeen Economic
Development Committee (SEDC) , a
10 -member committee of which Brant is
a member, Thomson said there's less
than 30 acres of properly zoned and ser-
viced industrial land. If forecasts are cor-
rect, he said the present supply of in-
dustrial land would last less than a year.
Ia "If webave no in,dpu: ral and commer-
cial growth,, we will become .dormant,"
be said, `adding truce qty has to look
to the future of its young people. In-
dustrial growth, be said, means jobs for
young people and that means they won't
have to leave the area in search of work.
County restructuring is under study in
Bruce County, he said, though he would
not speculate as to the outcome of the
study. Thomson did say when the study
is finished, he hopes fair decisions will be
made for the county "that suits
everyone."
As well, there's a study underway on
the county seniors and their needs. That
includes looking at the homes for the ag-
ed and what changes or expansion has to
take place to meet the demands of an ag-
ing population. That study also includes
needs such as hospital care, he said.
Thomson ended his address saying he
promotes a "pay as you go" strategy so
the future is not mortgaged for genera-
tions to come.
Following the election, Johnston con-
gratulated the new warden, saying the
campaign for the wardenship was a clean
one.
The election ended with two reeves
elected to three-year terms to the coun-
ty highways committee. Elected by ac-
clamation were John White and Harry
Thede.
