Ontario Farm- Stat Program
As 1989 grinds to a close those an-
ticipating waking appliatioun for grants
under the Ontario Farm -Start Paoggram
should be aware of the following time
frames.
It is expected that all persons enroll 9 '
in the Establishment Period (EP) of
Fartart will receive a "Statement of
Intention" form to be completed and
returned to their local county office no
later than February 1. Failure to do so
will result in a potential withdrawal of
the producer from the program.
However, of a more crucial nature, is
the rolling over of an applicant on the
EP phase to that of making application
for a grant. Producers beware, those who
wish to apply for grants under Farm -
Start in 1990, must do so within 90 days
of the commencement of their fiscal
year. For example, all those whose year
beginning is January 1, must submit a
completed application to the local coun-
ty office no later than March 31.
It is expected that producers who have
indicated intentions to enter the grant
phase of Farm -Start will be notified from
Toronto that all forms, etc. are available
from the county office. In any event the
information is respectfully provided
through local county staff.
Red Meat II
This is a message for all
stocker/slaughter enrollees who have
selected the weight gain and feed intake
data option (component) . Submissions for
grant payments must be submitted to the
Ministry in a satisfactory format by
March 31st of the year following the
calendar year to which the record
relates. Now in lay terms that translates
into this - for 1989 grants applications
must be received by March 31 in order
to be eligible.
Stocker/slaughter enrollees are re-
quired to provide TWO interim weights
for qualification. To some, this may be a
problem given the timing of Red Meat II.
Accordingly for 1989 only the rules are
as follows:
i) TWo interim weights are required, the
first at least 28 days after purchase and
to be taken before December 31st, 1989.
The second interim weight to be taken a
minimum of 28 days later or at least
prior to March 31, 1990.
Please note this ruling applies to
stocker/slaughter participants who chose

The Ontario Pork Industry Improve-
ment Plan has finish;1t its third year.
Many enroll producers have enjoy
the benefits of increased productivity and
profitability as a direct result of this
Program -
The deadline for enrolling in the pro-
gram is fast approaching. The last day
that an eligible pork producer can enroll
is Dec. 29, 1999. A producer must have 20
sow equivalents with one sow equivalent
equal to one sow or 15 market hogs,
marketed annually.
Up to $500 will be paid yearly to pro
dueers who submit production record
data quarterly. The production records
required are very straightforward and
can be completed if a producer keeps a
minimum set of records. The production
record form is divided into the following
sections: sales, purchases, production
figures, death losses and monthly inven-
tory. To ease information collecting, a
pocket -sized booklet especially designed
to correspond to the OPIIP production
records has been developed. These
booklets are available at your local
OMAF office.
Once the required production records
are submitted, then one is eligible to col-
lect monies for the following yearly
grants. Enterprise Analysis, Artificial In-
semination, Education, Herd Health and
Rodent Control.
The two main grants, namely the Ven-
tilation Grant and the Productivity and
Quality Improvement Grant, can be col-
lected for items purchased and services
completed since April 1, 1969. A grant of
two-thirds of the cost to a maximum of
$1,500 is available for eligible equipment
purchased in the last two years of this
program.
Remember the deadline for enrolling is
the end of December. Additional informa-
tion and enrollment forms are available
from your local OMAF office.
