Writers expresses concern wit "safer sex" ar campai ear Editor: `1°.his letter is in ryes se to the Brune - Grey -Owen e— Grey wen Sound Health ]iJnnt's "safer see" heir campaign and the related mat- ter of condom vending chimes fire se vols. You nay hove noticed that bvltere previously health office used the words "safe see" in their AIDS -education, they are now -using the more acute terans "safer sex." Notiee the small but signifi- cant addition .of the letter r. The reason? Having sex with an AIDS virus earrier using a condom is playing Russian roulette with your life. Back in February of than year a U.S. Public Health task force issued an em- phatic =warning on the risks of condom failure when used during intercourse with an AIDS virus terrier. They said that it was so dangerous that .anyone in such a situation should "consider alternative methods of expressing physical in- timacy Because of scanty reporting in the ma- jor media and it Health Ministries' lack of response, this important warning is not common knowledge and municipal health units happily spread the false security of " efer..sex" through our counties. ,a77[H entLtl media ours Mold of polls showing that a majority of students favoured condom vending machines in school washrooms. What else could one expect after govermnent health officials have come to school with their pro - condom message Are polls conducted on whether cigaret- tes should he sold at schools, or whether .drugs or alcohol .e.hoild be vended there? No; instead there .are serious .camp. aigas teaching students thatthese things are .unhealthy and that they must learn to say "no" to them. Why then do health 'officials not do ' the same for prematital sex? In light of the AIDS epidemic and the many serious venereal diseases that have 'rapidly in- creased both in Binds .andin _numbers of 1,. 41. The pessimistic attitude that reasons "No matter what is taught, they'll do it anyway, so we'll have to educate them to he 'safer' " has no place in education, which should strive to clearly teach ideals. Do driving instructors teach students how to be "safer" at speeding since they know half of thetas will? Let's hope not. Speeding can be fatal, and so can premarital sex these days. Encouraging condom use is in direct conflict with promoting health, whether it's .done via the schools, bars, or the media. When it comes to drugs, cigarettes and alcohol, health officials have no qualms in giving the right message. It's high time they do the same with regards to pro- and extra -marital sex. Sincerely, Joanne Nolan Lueknow Sentinel, Wednesday, Deeembei 1591989 ---Page masse resolut 1envir !mental is ues With a theme of Women and the En- s rontnent for the year, at was natural that scone of .the solutions sustained at the Annual Meeting of Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario held recently in Guelph, dealt with this topic that affects all who live in .rural Ontario. 1'W10 passed two resolutions that dealt with polycholinatedl biphenyls (PCBs), one asking that the Ministry of the En- vironment enforce legislation to eliminate PCBs and another asking that the Federal Dept. of Justice and the Ontario Attorney General prosecute politicians who allow infractions of the Environmen- tal Protection Act O Reg 11.82 pertaining to PCBs. As many of the members of FWIO live in rural and agricultural areas where many land fill sites are almost full and new sites are cont'mptated foe' local .gar- bage as well as sites for Toronto's gar- bage, the topic of waste was addressed. TWIG would like the minister of the envirtriment to legislate a drastic reduc- tion of "packaging" .and also to enact legislation to stop the use of strryofoa!n and plasties for meat and vegetables sold in stores. One WI branch donated WI mugs to their Io al township council to stop them using throw -away stryofoam mugs and another WI branch who does a lot of catering has gone back to using china dishes instead of plastic throw- away ones. Just an example of practical application of what they mean. The 111510 is not only concerned) with landfills and recycling in their own backyards. Last year they passed a resolution asking for mandatory recycling in Ontario. This Year they are asking the Federal Minister of the Environment to establish guidelines for waste disposal apart from landfilling; to enact legisla- tion making a consistent, efficient and . uniform recycling program in each pro- vince and territory across Canada. This program must be design:, to make full and optimum use of all recycling technology currenty available to ensure that Cam 'ea remains an environmentally safe country for our future generations. • r COPIER PAF: 20 Lb. bondpaper available in 89/2 x 11", 81 14" ,& 11 x 17". 1000 sheets per pack.PRICE-PEER 1000 _SHEETS 'CODE DESCRIPTION .LIST SPECIAL 122-1-10 White Letter Size 819.95 815.80in 122-2-10 White Legal :Size , :$25.80 420.15hr 122-3-10 White 11" x 17" *41.10 $34.25im 122-4 , Colour Letter Size X25.25 818.95 EXTRA SAVINGS BY CASE LOTS '" Q8 - x 11 White - 5000/Case5" i 1- 2230 in 2- 0 rn 4-a/ :df9 ir'!'4lil[ ■ k ■ inr SAVE y 4; 'Storage file box stores both letter and legal figs *Rugged and built lo east coConstructed of :three thicknesses of corrugated fiberboard *Randy tote bandlesrrtake iteasy .to -carry *Woodgrainstyling with large :laheliu lrea_•and lift-off ,App. Sze. 10" IN x 10" -h.x 15" 6 .• 12,i- nits per =carton 11-72,61725) LIST 115.75 CMPU PJPER • 91/2 IC 11 OM x 11 Strippet1 Size Plain White _ One Part Letter Edge Quality 30 m (15 MMS) Case of 2.50 $1 64:4 3-5 Cases et... 1 "5 a n 40 m (20 1b.)
