•Row do you measure up?
Last veers police report regarding the
stolen 'truck from main street made me
ream (swat) tow It listing and careless
(Seine Weald lis stupid) -some of ns
residents tof 1,zicknoW and area 81%.
Liv-
thg ill a small eonanunity we sometimes
t b1h artist in -everyone hving,comity
and, going fin our eommuriity. 'Now and
again, such as last week, we are isaniud-
• ed that there are those who take advan-
tage of our truStor carelessness.
1 took a quick survey of '20 people
before wilting this -column. Three clues -
tions were asked: 1. Do you lock your
house? 1. Do you leave your keys in the
vehicle or leave your vehicle ri,mning
While you do 4aTI errand? a. Do you lock
your vehicle? In reply to weldor' 1, 60
per cent answered yes, 40 percent no. To
uesticm 4,15 per cent aidd no, 15 per
cent xelilied yes. QueigiOn 3 meeived a '70
per cent no and 80 per et yes.
Some of those replying said that it
wended where they were going if they
•locked their doors. if they were simply
raining into Ltuflmow, they didn't lock
them. :If they were going a greater
distance, they did loerthem.
While .85 per 'cent said they did not
leave their keys in the vehicle or leave
• it running, they admitted they bad on oc-
casion done just so. But on a regular
basis, they did not.
Vehicles appeared to be locked more
often .4f they owner had groceries or
something Of value in the car, If it was
empty they didn't 'bother locking up.
e .said they locked -their vehicles if
they came to town, but didn't lock them
up at night at home. Others said the
reverse.
During conversations I lave bad with
friends this subject, we have tiled to
determine If .where you were Taisedlias
anything tollo with the'l we form.
I was ,born and raised mlkampton,
which at one time was a small tovm, but
located fairly ,close to Toronto. 1 shays
locked doors. I remember when we first
moved to the farm. There wasn't one
lock on any door in the house. I insflab
ber gasted that anyone eould live like
this. But I -quiddy learned ours wasn't
the only place that didret have locks, or
if they bad them, weren't using them. I
never was comfortable with this -careless
-attitude towards leaving your home
unlocked, and ,finally an incident trig-
gered a fast trip to -the hardware store
where I purchased a supply of locks and
insisted Mr. Pixit 1.1140 them.
We started locking the vehicles after a
truck was stolen from our property. Is
that what's called locking the barn door
after the cow escapes?
Of cause, if someone wants to break
into your home or steal your vehicle bad-
ly enough, locked doors may not deter
them. But at least we are not making it
easier for them.
'Talk to' someone living in a city and
ask them if they leave anything unlock-
ed. They look at you as if you are crazy.
Have you ever stopped at the poSt Of-
fice and left the car running while you
quickly make a made dash for the mail?
Bow about stopping at a store to quick-
ly grab a bag Of -milk or loaf of bread?
It doesn't lake Ica* for someone to jump
into .your vehicle and be gone.
Most upsetting is seeing a parent leave
a child unattended in a vehicle while they
run for the mail or that bag of milk.
It is a sad .commentary on our society,
that there are thieves and !tiara around
to prey upon our tinging natures. What
was common in the cities at one time,
has now invaded nutd • o
will remember
