Grade six at LCPS working VIP program

On Friday, November 10 at 10:30 a.m.
there will be a Remembrance Day ser-
vice held in the Lucknow Public School
gYal.
Everyone is welcome!
On December 1 there will be a
Christmas Book fair at Lucknow Public
School. Everyone is welcome! More
details later.
Grade 5/6 is our attendance class of
the month with a 1% absentee rate. Well
done!
Kindergarten
What a great month October has been.
We had a wonderful trip to the Stahli
farm. Thank you Co-op and Mr. and Mrs.
Statin. We enjoyed every minute of our
visit.
We also enjoyed all our Halloween ac-
tivities, games, songs and party.
-We are looking forward to November
and learning about how animals prepare
for wir „er.
We nave four November birthdays,
Saral., Tim, Janice and Elaine.
Grade 1
Mrs. Bell is very proud of her grade
one class. They signed out 154 books in
September and October in the WEB pro-
gram. (Wonderfully Exciting Books).
They were able to tell about their books
when they returned them. Some children
have enjoyed so many that they need a
new page to put their book titles on ! !
"Special Me's" for October were Dylan,
Devin, Lisa and WilliamY. We have
finished our unit on trees and are ready
to learn about What Makes Weather.
• Grade 1/2
The grade one and two class had a fun
time creating their own masks for
Hallowe'en. These masks were designed
to go along with a play they did called
"The Huge Green Monster."
Chris Hackett received the "super
estimates" award. He guessed 400 seeds
in the .pumpkin and the actual . number
was 379. Thank yoiu to Mrs. Hackett,
Mrs. Thacker and the 'Nursing Home for
the yummy goodies they gave us.
Congratulations to Jamie Pritchard and
Alicia Thacker, "Superstars" of the
week.
Grade 2/3

school to help us bake for Halloween. We
had fun showing off our costumes, play-
ing games and eating our "Spider"
cookies. Hope you had as much fun as
we did!
Grade 3/4
The grade three-four class interrupted
their bear centers to work on a
Hallowe'en unit. In Language Arts they
wrote Hallowe'en stories, did phonics and
a Hallowe'en word study. During En-
vironmental studies they continued with
pumpkin activities, measuring height and
circumference, weighing, studying
physical features and creating pumpkin
characters.
The class enjoyed a wonderful after-
noon at the Wawanosh Nature Centre to
complete their "Nature" Unit.
Many students in the class collected
money for UNICEF on Hallowe'en night.
They were able .to help children from
other countries who are less fortunate
than the students at LOPS.
Grade 4!5
Grades four -five have finished off their
Fascinating E.S. unit on paper. They
broke their pinata this week.
They have started a unit on 'fantasy
and are reading lots of delightful "make
believe" stories. Grade 4/5 has decided
that their land of reality isn't so bad
after all!
Grade. 5/6'
Things are progressing well in five -six.
We have recently started a pilot project
unit on Fish of Ontario put out by the
Ministry of Natural Resources. Quite a
number of us have first hand experience
in this field and the unit is enjoyable and
.interesting
:Special thanks to Steven Sellars who
brought in his aquarium to provide a
suitable home for 28 fish. Steve also
found himself in charge of aquarium
maintenance and is doing a great job!
Grade 6/7
The grade six -seven class has been
working on French Posters of Hallowe'en
costumes that are very interestuig.
In art we are painting things in
unusual .places in our pictures.

In creative writing we made riddles.
Some of them are hard to answer.
The grade six class is working on
V.I.P. So far they have done Values to
Standards, Vandalism, Stealing and
Authority Figures.
Some of the students in our class will
be playing their instruments for the
Remembrance Day service in Lucknow.
Our class has won class of the month
for the most improved during October.
Special Ed
In the Special Education classroom this
week they had an exciting Hallowe'en
Party. Instead of bobbing for apples you
had to get the apples down with your
mouth from where they were hanging
from the ceiling. To top it all off they
made popcorn and had a Hallowe'en
story.
They are also watching some plants
grow and are planning to get some new
ones planted. Soon they will have their
own plant to look after.
Mr. Flannigan's class is looking for-
ward to their report cards.
Marjorie Thompson and Kay Thacker
visited in Waterloo on' Sunday with Dr.
David & Nancy Haldenby & family. Mary
& Kays' uncle, Wilbert Haldenby of
Beechwood Manor was also a guest of the
Haldenbys"
Janet Farrell and Maureen Collins were
in London on Saturday to help elect a new
bishop for the diocese of Huron.
Visiting on the weekend with Jack &
Janet Farrell were Janice Millar and
Rachel, Colleen & Louise of Thorndale.
Patrick Farrell visited with his cousins
at the farm on Saturday.
Jan & Simon Logtenberg & family
visited on Saturday evening with Jim &
Fran Farrell.
Spooks & goblins had a grand time at
the Purple Grove Hallowe'en P 4! San-
dra McGillivray & Marleneollins,
assisted by Dianne Simpson & John Collins
conducted a terrific program which kept
everyone entertained. It was reported that
35 children had received treats.
Enjoying a judo tournament in Kitchener
on Saturday was Ian MacDonald.
Shirley MacDonald spent Tuesday in
Megan's Gr.4 class helping to make jack -
o -lanterns assisting with the Hallowe-en
Sheena MacDonald is a Co-op student at
Ripley -Huron Central School in the
Kindergarten class.
Several folks from the Grove attended
the Holyrood •W.L bazaar on Saturday and
the hot fowl supper at Kingarf on Sunday.
Barabara & Allan Brown, Toronto, spent
the weekend with Jim & Isabelle Brooks.
The Bible study group met at Bette
McLeod's on Tuesday.
Peter & Edith Peterson, & Helen Smith
of London visited this weekend with Isabel
and Norval 'Stanley.

Wilma Sutton welcomed Purple Grove
Women's Institute to her home for their
November Meeting. President Fran Farrell
was in charge. It was decided to order
more cookbooks in hope that they will be
available for Christmas giving. Wilda
Thompson was convenor for an enjoyable
program of poems, quizzes and a ,skit.
Special guest, Joan Sumner, spoke on her
work with the Adult "Leading to Reading"
program. A social hour ended the evening.
Kay Collins & Gordon Patterson attend-
ed the 97th birthday party for their uncle,
Sam Wismer, at the home of Marg & Mer-
rild Kuehl, Waterloo, Sunday.

Bessie Maulden returned home from
Fonda where she visited with Mr. and

The Holyrood Women's Institute met on
Thursday evening at the home of Agnes
Hodgins with 14 members and two
visitors present. The President Betty
Smith welcomed everyone and the Ode
was sung and Mary Stewart Collect was
repeated.
The roll call was a concern I have
about the rural community.
A donation was made to the Lucknow
Benevolent Christmas fund.
The Area Convention report was given
by Joan Murray and Grace Eckenswi ier.
Bazaar plans were finalized and Betty
Smith announced the Christmas dinner at
1:30 and the meeting following on
December 7.
The director was Charlene McEwan
who opened the program with -a contest
Which was won by Mary Scott and Joan
Murray's contest was won by Betty
Smith.
The guest speaker was Carol Cooper,
coordinator o Rural Connections, who
stressed the fact that women should get
together and talk over their problems.
She also had an interres *Mallon trion and
answer period.
