Open to women upon the payment of
an annual 'membership, the Women's In-
stitute is an educational, nonpartisan,
non-seetarian, and non=racial organization
which has .an effective influence
municipally - 1,700 pith members in Grey
and Bruce, provincially with 30,000
members, nationally through the
Federated Women's Institute of Canada
and internationally with over eight
ma i members of the Associated Coun-
try Women of the World.
It was founded in 1897 at Stoney Creek,
Ontario by a housewife, Adelaide
Hoodless. At that time most of Ontario's
population was on the farm; :only 2 per
cent of today's population is rural but the
organization remfiins active.
AnnualConvention
The 31 annual convention of the Grey -
Bruce area, Federated Women's In-
stitutes of Ontario, held in the 'Beaver
Valley Community Ball, Thornbury, on
October 10, attracted '236 delegates and
visitors.
Tonia 'Unglue, Convention President,
and Ruth Thomas, Grey County Rally
Chairman, welcomed the group.
All committee reports were given -
:$62,558 was donated to -F W_I.O. and com-
munity projects and •$14,000 'was raised
for Participation Lodge through 'the 1989
quilt auction.
Resolution re: abortion and Via Rail
were sent on to provincial level.
Carol 'Wiegel, Seniors' Ccwrdinator .for
Bruce County, and Carol Cooper, Rural
Connections, .each outlined her associa-
tion's services.
. Rural Organization Specialists, Denise
Edwards and Sharon Gardner, presented
a ' hart -fillusb:ationitoIthovr Abattto
aurvivelmetaustMastervhangevspecial-
ly in future -rural isms.

Change, Challenge and 'Communication in
:the 'F W.I.O. Rural women ..are :trying .to
cope with -working Doff and on the morin;
the .farm 'population is -dwindling rapidly,
aging an declining F.W.I.O. membership
is affecting volunteer help: thus the need
for better conununication ,through visual
media and workshops.
Mrs. Kingra spoke on the 4 R's of Liv-
ing - -Responsibility, Respectability,
Reasoning and :Recognition.

.Shortt, Carol 'Craig and Jrma Clack.:gave
reports and announced -workshops ..in June
.in 'Guelph and :in Ottawa. handbook cor-
rections were made.
FOlklore winners were Isabel Carman,
.Mrs. Orland Magwood, Viola :Clark ,and
Charlotte Wilson.
