G and E Sales and Service in its 25th
For the Priestaps of Luclrow, this
marks the third special 'occasions in their
family this fall - they welcomed a
daughter-in-law to their family,
celebrated their 25th anniversary and this
past week, although, slightly premature,
their business was recognized for its 25
years in the fanning industry.
Originally G and E Sales and Service
was a partnership owned by .Edon Mann
and Gerry. For approximately six years
the men operated their Massey Ferguson
dealership on Inglis Street.
In 1971, the business was moved to its
new quarters on county road one, north
of Lucknow.
In 1981 Mr. Mann retired and Gerry
and his current staff of six have con-
tinued on with the operation.
As well as the Massey line, G and E
handles Gehl products and Wil -rich tillage
equipment.
A quick assessment of the past 25
years finds times have changed drastical-
ly. When this business opened, 30 to 40
tractor sales in a year was considered
good. Now due to the condition of the far-
ming industry, a dealer would consider
the sale of 12 to 15 per year as good and
be darned thankful for it.
While the sale of new machinery is
down considerably, parts sales is holding
its own. More farmers are repairing and
extending the life of their machinery,
rather than purchasing new. Good used
equipment is hard to come by for resale
because farmers aren't trading.
Dealers are less apt these days to have
a full line of new equipment on display
on their premises. At one time Massey
carried around 12 tractor models, now at
least three times that many are
available. A dealer simply cannot afford
to stock all models in a time when sales
are the decline.
It is a well known fact that if the
farmers are suffering so is everyone else
in a business related to, or located in,
farming area.
Over the years Gerry believes the ma-
jority of his business has come from
Lucknow and area farmers. He's thankful
for that and for all the friendships that
have developed as a result of 25 years in
one community.
A quarter of a century in the farming wry was recognized last week when Massey
Ferguson Industries Ltd. representatives presented Gerry Priestap, owner of G and
E Sales and Services with a plaque marling the event. On hand for the presentation
were left to right, Claude Chartrand, Errol Foster, Gerry and Mary Lon Priestap,
Frank Clarke and John Van Every. (Tom Thompson photo)
