Federal goods
and services
shouldn't be
on electricity
To the editor:
Brian Mulroney's tax on goods and ser-
vices won't bring the Federal government
any more money? So says Michael Wilson.
Yet the tax on electricity in Ontario alone
will bring them over half -a -billion dollars
from this previously untaxed necessity.
Now Otto Jelinek .says he'll need almost
4,000 new collectors to collect the 'same
amount of money. There seems to be room
for .some correction.
Brian Mulroney should try NOT taxing
electricity. In other countries with a value
added tax, they have recognized electrici-
ty as a necessity.

SignaI Star buys Shoreline News
John Schut, owner of Shoreline
Publishing Ltd., announced this week that
the company and its publication,
Shoreline News, was purchased by Signal -
Star Publishing Ltd. of Goderich.
The tabloid paper, which began
publication in May 1959, is the second
community newspaper serving the in-
terests of the Port Elgin, Southampton,
Saugeen Township area.
Schist, who remains general manager of
Shoreline News, explained that the sale of
the publication was a necessary and
positive step in its development.
"There has to be a good rationale for
selling and, in this case, the benefits for
the publication and the community are
substantial," he said. "With Signal -Star
Publishing we have greater resources,
better opportunities for our employees
and we can now provide improved news
coverage and service to our readers and
advertisers.
There is good synergy between the new
owners and the employees and, of course,
there is always room for a fresh and dif-
ferent
idferent perspective."
Shoreline News, with a staff of 11 and
circulation of 7,000, will retain its local
staff and management while gaining a
broader base of editorial assistance and
input from Signal -Star's presence in
Bruce County with the Walkerton Herald
Times, the Kincardine News, and the
Luck now Sentinel.
The acquisition of Shoreline News was
a logical and benefical opportunity that
Signal -Star could not pass up, Tom Flynn
General Manager Publishing, said, adding
that the economic buoyancy of the region
indicated a second publication was
needed.
"The purchase of Shoreline News simp-
ly made good business sense for the com-
pany considering our interests in Bruce
County. We can now offer a wider
editorial perspective and a broader base
for our advertisers," he said. "We were
very much impressed with the com-
munities, the quality people at Shoreline
and the professional product they deliver
to the people of the area. We purchased
more than a thriving publication, it was
the professional, dedicated staff that im-
pressed us."
The vibrancy and diversity of the com-
munities' suggests they can support two
publications Flynn said, adding that
Signal -Star Publishing looks forward to
providing the same quality product and
service that has been the trademark of
Shoreline News since its inception.
Signal -Star now publishes eight com-
munity newspapers in small towns in
Perth, Huron and Bruce Counties and
owns and operates a central web.offset
printing plant in Goderich.
While Signal -Star has experienced
substantial growth during the 1980s,
Flynn said the company takes pride in
the fact that its papers operate in-
dependently and autonomously in each
community.
"Each paper has its own management
and staff and is an integral and vital
component of the community it serves,"
he said. "That's the way we like to
operate."
