Local veterinarians in conjunction with the Bruce Grey Owen Sound Health Unit held low cost rabies clinic in the area promoting vaccination of pets. Provincial regulations now makes it mandatory for all dogs and cats over three months of age and all riding horses to be immunized by November 1. Dr. Ken Bridge of the Lucknow Huron Veterinary Clinic paid visits . to the local schools promoting preventive health care for pets. He brought ado friends, Clarabell and Fred the Pig, for the kindergarten, grades one and two of Lucknow Christiap School to help give his presentation. According to Pat Porter, president of the committee, the price of newspaper has plummeted over the past year. At one time, the price was $42 per ton. For the past few years, the price has been steady at $32 per ton. During the spring drive, the price was down to $22 per ton but the committee believed it was still a worthwhile endeavour. However, since the spring, prices have fallen further to $10 per ton. The group averaged a collection of seven ton and McLellan Disposal Ser- vices charges $80 for freight to bring the bin to Lucknow and pick it up again. Simple mathematics tells you that the committee would end up in the red. Mrs. Porter spoke with McLellans and was informed that the reason for the decline is the "blue box" program. Also, in the past, the paper was shipped to a paper mill in Quebec. Any surplus was sent to Europe through a govern- ment subsidy program. The government discontinued the subsidy program and the paper mill will now only take as much paper as they themselves can use, which is understandable. This group has been forced to find another method of fund-raising and will colibct Knechtel cash register tapes. Each $1,000 worth of tapes is worth $3.75. Mrs. Porter asks for the support of residents in this new fund-raising ef- fort, as it is for a very worthwhile cause. There will be a box in the municipal office at the Lucknow Town Hall or you can give your tapes to anyone involved in the -Guiding movement. The Township of West Wawanosh has a recycling program in place and the clerk bas informed Mrs. Porter that residents of Lucknow and area could take their papers to the collection bin at the dump there.
