Kinettes mise .over
$1.500 for OF
Ths.huelmov and District Kinettes held
their first ever OF 'Toll on October 6 and
collected over 1;500.00 to help in the
fight 'against Cystic Fibrosis.
'The Kinsmen and Kinette clubs across
Canals! .back CF as their -major 'fund-
raising effort. Cystic 'Fibrosis _affects `_ths
lungs, pancreas and sweat -glands -making
breathing and .digestion crhe
disease lis caused 'when a child inherfts
the CF gene from both parents, but it
has not been _known exactly what the
molecular [defect in the gene 7was. One in
20 people are carriers the gene. If both
parents are .carriers, the chance of the
child having QF is mein 'four. There has
never been -a way to know if you are a
carrier or not.
In -September .a major breakthrough
was announced by :the .1iospital for Sick
Children in Toronto and Howard 'Hughes
Medical Institute at the University .of
Michigan, the :discovery of the defective
gene which causes cystic :fibrosis. Dr.
Lap-Chee TSII, a geneticist at Sick Kids
and Dr. Francis Collins of the Michigan
.Institute have :been credited 'with this
breakthrough. There is still a lot of
research to be done and the battle to
:bring this -disease under 'centre' is :far
from over but for Cie :sufferers there is
a glimmer of hope at the end of the
tunnel.
