A look :back at :the old minutes finds the w-elistraiown Lucknow names involved in the passing :of the byslaws, such as, Ewart Jamieson, Roy 'MeRay, John Cowan, 'T.A. Cameron, D. A. 'M ..d, Mr. Zinn, Wallace Miller, William Roulston, Harvey Anderson,. William Wilton, Eimer Alton. The minutes ef a directors' meeting o' November 21, 1944 lists .Murdoch Matheson as president, with :the board of directors consisting of ef Cameron as vice vresident; Vallare Millar as se- cond vice; Harry _Lavis as secretary, Fred Anderson, Elmer Alton, William Hamilton .and D.A. .MacDonakl. John Jamieson MSS to continue as manager. One :of the first objests was to -Ell de- mand for good commercial fertilizer at a reasonable price. 'The first Co-op fertilizer was mixed in a frame building at the C.N.R. station and in 1946 a new fertilizer mixing plant and warehouse was built "across the tracks", and modern equip- ment installed. Co-op -fertilizer is still blended on 'this property today. The present Cliff Mann building, .formerly known as the Boyd shop, on Ross Street was where .the first retail operations began. As -the Lucknow District Cooperative continued to expand and grow, a store was opened on Campbell Street, carrying , s full line 62 supplies an 'feeds for sires farmers. At one time a .grocery store was operated. In 1956, the Co-op addedpetroleum ser- vice to their line with the -first driver be- ing Murray Henderson. 1978 saw the Co-op moving to new modern farm and urban supply store built 'in Ashfield Township, just south of Lucknow. Managers over .the years include John Jamieson, Robert 'Bonk, W.C. Finlayson, Charles Stevens, Alen MadNay (interim), Jack MacArthur, Grant Case, Lorne Power, Ross Robinson, Stuart Jamieson, Lloyd Crawford, Nelson Hill, Dave Dawson, Rob Adam and the present manager, Paul Ackert. For a period of five years in the 80's, the outlook appeared rather dim for the Co-op, with successive financial losses. The determination of the board of direc- tors, staff and members working together through a period of restructuring saw the asop record a net prtifit over 4;90,000 and pay 8 and 6 percent dividends on Class and ,A and : shares respectively, in 1988. With the business forging ahead and due to community interest, the Ripley Branch of the Co-op was opened in November 1 St; Special events have been planned for this 45th celebration. Today (Wednesday) staff will be serving up free hot dogs and a drink, -from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Satur- day a beef barbecue is planned from 5 -, 9 p.m., with a social -time at 3 pan.
