Water pipeline access proposed
Thonlpsons plan to devote full
for CP rail line time to inbusiness
The former CP rail property between
Guelph and Goderich would make an
ideal pipeline corridor to pump fresh
water from Lake Huron to Guelph and
Kitchener, says Huron County Council! i:r
Tom Cunningharn.
Cunningham urged council last week to
take a formal position on the issue, which
has seen.adjacant property owners ask-
ing for the land, as well as recreational
groups lobbying for a provincially fund-
ed trail system.
"Maybe the 'county should come forth
with a position that we can all support,"
said Cunningham, who is reeve of Hullett
Township. He added that members of an
interministerial study group told him
recently that the pipeline proposal is get-
ting serious consideration.
Council was also told, both by Cunn-
ingham and administrators Bill Hanly
and Gary Davidson, that the study group
has said it will not make a recommenda-
tion until Huron County finally reaches a
decision.
"I think we are holding the thing in the
palm of our :hands,'" said Hanly. "I think
Huron County Council does have .a bit of
a hold on what happens to this corridor."
Cunningham said both Kitchener and
Guelph are looking toward Lake Huron
as long term solutions for expected water
shortages, and retaining the CP line "in
the public domain" would' be far simpler
than an appropriation process for other
property.
He also said municipalities along the
route could tap into the waterline for
their own needs.
One Huron reeve reminded council that
his and other municipalities have taken
an official position that the CP land
should go back to the landowners, whose
property is otherwise separated by the
corridor.
"These landowners need that land to
get to the other parts of their farms, but
there's no reason you can't have a
pipeline under agricultural land," said
Morris Township Reeve Doug Fraser.
The county's .planning department is
studying the issue in search of a county
recommendation which "respects all of
the positions," said Planning director
Gary Davidson.
Hospital under
budget again
this year
Wingham Hospital is already in the
black this year with about $17,000 in ex-
cess revenue over expenditures, the
hospital Board of Governors has learned.
Janet Clarke, chairman of the hospital
finance committee, told the board that at
the end of June, expenditures exceeded
revenues by about $334000. "it was actual-
ly better than our budget had indicated;
we were prepared to have about $57,000
in excess expenditures by that tirne,"
Mrs. Clarke noted.
By the end of the summer, however,
the hospital's financial position had
changed, and corning up to the half-year
mark, the financial picture is expected to
continue improving, she noted.

Last Friday ended one area of Don and
Bev Thompson's business ventures that
has Spanned over 15 years.
Effective October 6, they ended their
sale of lottery tickets from The Lottery
Shoppe.
The Thompsons' involvement with lot-
tery tickets began with the $10.00 Olym-
pic Lottery, when lotteries were first
made legal in Canada prior to the Mon-
treal Olympics. Originally distributors for
Lotto Canada, the Federal Lottery, they
later became distributors for the
charitable lotteries, Cash for Life and Pot
of Gold.
When the wholesale distribution of lot-
teries ended, Don and Bev decided to
continue as a retail ticket business.
Approximately nine years ago, they
entered the investment field as deposit
brokers for several trust companies. This
business has continued to grow and they
now intend to devote their full time to
this area.
Lucknow and area residents are happy
to know that the Thompson family con-
tinues its association with the business
community - one that started with Don's
great, great grandfather, Malcolm Camp-
bell, Lucknow's first merchant and
postmaster.
Local NDP will circulate
petition against proposed tax
The imposition of the goods and ser-
vices tax will be fought by means of a
petition which will be circulated
throughout the county.
This was the plan of action adopted at
the Sept.. 27 meeting of the Huron Coun-
ty New Democrats. Taking the lead from
the federal New Democratic party leader
Ed .Broadbent, the Huron County
members will show how unfair this new
tax will be.
Copies of the petition will be placed in
retail outlets which will be . adversely af-
fected
ffected by the tax. Copies are available
from Huron County NDP President
Heather Klopp, who hosted the meeting
at her home near Zurich.
The International Peace Walk, which
will take place from Hungary to Kiev,
will be supported by sponsoring Eric
Eberhardt of Stratford. He will join more
than 200 North Americans who will take
part and will be joined by local citizens
from the Soviet Union.
The forum on the environment will be
held Nov. 15 in Lucknow. it will focus on
bringing concerned groups and in-
dividuals together to look at environmen-
tal problems in our community and how
to solve them.
