On Saturday, August 12, five weathers
of the 1st Lucknow Scout Troop left or
an exalting adventure .at the Ibliburton
Scout Reserve (HSR). After packing our
knapsacks and tents and joining leaders
and scouts of the lst Teeswater Troop,
a caravan .of trucks and vans embarked
on a five hour journey to our temporary
home for the next week. To break the
monotony of the last seven,. very rough,
eurvy miles, humorous signs were
posted. We read a fantasy! Ten thou-
sand girls are *ailing for us, 10,000
mosquitoes that is!
As we passed through the gates of
HSR, we could see a large totem pole,
cabins, water and a dock. We unloaded
our gear near this dock, and to our
delight, we were told that we were cam-
ping on Doe Island. After our gear was
carried onto a pontoon -type barge and
personal flotation devices fitted on each
of us we set sail. A few minutes later
we were honie. Camp was set up, in-
cluding our latrine, and rules were laid
out.
The next day our leaders Richard,
Norm and Darren (on Wednesday Dar-
ren leaves and Dave arrives) arranged
activities for the week. Because all the
activities took place away from the
island, we began with compulsory canoe
instruction. These canoes stayed with us
for the duration of our stay. It was
estimated we paddled 40 miles over the
course of time. Row boats were also
.available to go fishing. Richard also
taught us canoe over canoe rescue.
In the evening Scouter Dave picked us
up in the barge to star gaze. He pointed
out various constellations and discussed
the •mythology behind them.. Some of us
looked through our closed eyelids.
During the week we participated in
sailing, kayaking, snorkeling, • survival,
swimming, fishing, .archery, riflery and
survival. Each event was taught by
very efficient HSR staff.
,Iri sailing we tipped -the boat just to
learn how to right the sail. However,
some of us turtled it. Learning how to
roll the kayak was adventurous. When
we snorkeled the clear waters of Ken-
nabi Lake we saw a latrine, bike and a
pair of running shoes. These were put
there •by the staff, not litter bugs.
Scouter Dave showed us how to aim a
rifle and Scouter Bob explained how to
use a bow and arrow. On Friday, we
participated in a shoot -off in both riflery
and archery. It was at the authentic
trappers cabin where we learned how to
set traps and found out that there is
still a buried treasure here; but we
didn't have time to search for it.
The "H" dock was the only one spot
in camp where we were able to dive.
All other swimming was feet first
Policy.
On Tuesday evening we exchanged
badges with scouts from Pennsylvania
and other parts of Ontario.
In the final days we competed in
several events with other Scouts camp-
ing at the reserve. Dave steered himself
right into the water when we struggled
in the 'Queen's boat' race. On Friday,
night we attended a camp wide
campfire.
Saturday morning we broke camp.
Before we could leave the reserve two
staff checked the island for debris. The
"QB" carried our gear and we boarded
the barge back to the dock. Our week
was over!
This trip will not be forgotten by
these boys. Our gratitude goes out to
the many supporters of our fund
raisers. We also can't say enough about
the ample time and energy put forward
by Richard, Norm, Dave and Darren.
