Youth Skills Programs ease

BY JACK RIDDIG.1,,
Ontario contin" ues to provide leader -
hp in the area cif alas development
for the estimated 66 percerit
teenagers who do not go to university or
college when they leave high school.
To this end, my colleagues at Queen's
Park have treated time programs that
will help move these teenagers into
meaningful jobs. The package, which
will iced a total ,of $1146 million to le-
ment, was unveiled last week by Skills
Development Minister Alvin Curling.
Ontario's new Toth Mils Programs
are deSigned to provide a solid founda-
tion for young people through aspren-

will he able to combine schoolroom
education with on-the-job work

Your govermnent believes that if
teenagers are to secure well-paykkg, jobs
in .a world of tecimfibigical change and
industrial restructuring, they must have
,access to training options. This is par-

Under this program, employers with
trainee apprentices are eligible for a
$1,000 wage subsidy for each summer
student they hire -as an apprentice. The
Summer Trades Experience is designed
to give stridents a better insight into the
world of skilled occupations.
The. wit be launched in the
summer of 1990.
Rapid technological advances are
changing the face of the workplace, and
it is a fact of industrial life in Ontario
that there are skills shortages in certain
business seetois.
Your Government is committed to en-
suring that ow workforce will be poised
to meet the market challenges and
make a meaningful contribution to
tomorrow's growth.
