HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Lucknow Sentinel, 1989-08-02, Page 161 Amnesty international members ce by Sheila 'Tirvill Members of Amnesty International South Bruce croup 97 were thrilled to learn their adopted prisoner of cons- cience, the Reverend "Fakede Hundesa, Pastor of the Ethiopian Evangelical Mekane Yesus Church, has been releas- ed along with two others who were sup- ported by AI groups in other countries. Reverend Hundesa was arrested along with several )other members of his thumb, school teachers .and hospital employees on January 22, 1983 and im- prisoned without charge or trial. He is married and has three children. After being iniprisoned for six and one half years, his family will be celebrating his release as well as Al members in •Lucknow, Pine River, Port Elgin and Kincardine. Group 97 has been writing polite letters to government officials in Ethiopia for the past five years. Janice Yule, keeper of the prisoner dossier, estimates local members have sent almost 1000 letters requesting information about Rev. Hundesa. Ruth Bell of Lncknow was the former keeper of the dossier, for four years. No replies have been received but, his does not mean they had no impact. Although it can never be proven that let- ters prompt the release of prisoners of conscience, Al is convinced they help. The, provisions of the Government's Housing Policy _Statement will be fully implemented as soon as possible in –areas where growth ,pressures are greatett. These areas include: Metrowlitan Toronto, Durham, York, Peel, Halton, BamiltonMentworth, Ottawa -Carleton, niagara and Waterloo; the municipalities within these regions; and 211rnuniclpalities within 'the census metropolitan areas of landon, Toronto and irmdsor. In most mmiicipalities1 the Policy Statement will be fully Implemented over the course of the next five yeats as official plans are routinely Updated. Townships and villages 'with populations of less than 5,000 may use alternative approaches to reflect the principles and fulfill the objectives of the Policy 3tatement.
