hector of Goodwill
Industries speaks at
hospital auxiliary meeting
The Auxiliary to the Wingham and
District Hospital met June 25 in the
hospital board -room with president
Mary Lou Cameron presiding.
Dorothy Griffin, Business Administra-
tion Director of Goodwill Industries Lon-
don and chairperson of Alexandria
Hospital Ingersoll was speaker for the
occasion. `Referring to -the abundance of
used clothing sent to Goodwill Industries
following 'Hospital Auxiliary Rummage
Sales, Mrs. Griffin stressed how needful
our donations and others are in pro-
viding work and wages for the han-
dicapped employed by Goodwill In-
dustries. All clothing is sorted - and
classified as saleable or unsaleable. Cer-
tain materials are cut for wiping cloths
and sold to various industries. Un-
saleable items are sold to salvage
companies.
"Recycling of clothing is just the
peripheral" Mrs. Griffin stated "and is
secondary to training those with
physical di icjties_. of_ sight heari ,_
cardiovascular and orthopaedic pro-
blems, developmental - and social
behavioural patterns and the functional-
ly illiterate." Goodwill Industries also
works in :conjunction with the Workmens
Compensation Board and the Ministry of
Community and Social Services pro-
viding .individual assessments through a
Vocational Rehabilitation Program aim-
ing to reinstate productive .and positive
workers according to their physical
capabilities.
There are 177 branches of Goodwill
Industries in the U.S.A. and .nine in

seven outlet stores and there are two
workshops and 15 'Thrift stores . in On-
tario. A video was also shown.

Weather conditions throughout the
month of June have not been favourable
for curing hay. As the month progressed
many farmers were anxious to get hay in
the barn without being rained on. But
was it dry enough? Farmers should
beware that wet hay or dry haylage can
ignite due to spontaneous combustion
anytime during the first month or even
longer after harvest.
Usually the first indication is that un-
mistakable smell of hot hay and maybe
steam rising from the mow or silo. Make
sure you visit the storage area every
day. The .following guidelines indicate the
danger levels as the temperature rises;
65°C (150°F) ENTERING THE DANGER
ZONE. Make temperature observations
daily.
70°C (160°F) DANGER! Inspect every
four hours to see if temperature ,is rising.
80°C (175°F) FIRE POCKETS MAY BE
ANTICIPATED. Call the fire department.
.85°C (185°F) CONTROL THE FIRE.
REMOVE THE HOT :MATERIAL.
100°C (210°F) CRITICAL. In the presence
of oxygen, ignition will quickly take
place.
Without -a thermometer, any rod or
pipe pushed ;into the hay two meterswill
give an indication of the .temperature. If
you can hold ionto the :metal when it is
removed from the hay with your bare
hand, it will be less than 65'C. if you can
only touch it for an Instant, it is .:IOC or
over and the materialshould be remov-
ed. Never attempt to remove hot hay
alone or without the local fire brigade
standing by.
