•Lucknow and Ben :Barnes of Morris
Twp. - attended the Provincial Council
of the NDP held in Gravenhurst -from
June 16;20. The conference focused on

The Ontario Government has set :the
month :of June aside to eelebrate the
achievements and contributions tff older
Onterians
The Minister for Senior Citizens' Af-
fairs, the Honourable Mavis Wilson, an-
nounced that the 'theme chosen for 'this
year's Seniors' Month is "Tap The
Potential': The theme has a double
m. ..ge. 1u seniors, it says: Use your
wisdom and experience to discover new
talents and explore new horizons. It is
also • a reminder that seniors are eager
to meet new challenges and share their
creativity, -enthusiasm and experience
with fellow °Martens.
Since •taking office, the Liberal
Government has charted a course for
securing a -better .future for the .people
of Ontario. The following initiatives en-
sure that our -reform agenda will en-
courage seniors to -participate fully in
Ontario's prosperity.
1. A series of seminars which allow
seniors 'to address relevant issues was
•instituted by •the Minis' ter -for Senior
Citizens' Affairs last fall. These
seminars .provide a constructive -forum
through which seniors can voice their
concerns.
2. A cornerstone in this Government's
-policy-is the--assurmice that eas&dainee-
is available to suitors who want to 're-
main .in their homes. 'That assistance is
•guaranteed by this Government :through
community services. Farther, those ..who
require :institutional care are „given the
'highest quality of care in that -setting.
To --ensure those services, the province
has provided :the -fallowing .initiatives
under the Rome Care and Home Sup-
port pregrams

An atklitional $70 millien for Heine
Care Assietence in 10040; additional
funding in 19.0 to iMprove salaries
and benefits for homeinakers and atten-
dant care workers
3. Funds have been allocated for the
development of 25 new elderly perm's'
centres. An ,additional two Million
-dollars has been .approv: II to support
the operation and funding of elderly per-
sons' centres in Ontario.
4. Seniors with special 'transportation
needs will -benefit from an additional
five million dollars to frnprove transpor-
tation services for -seniors and disabled
people.
5. The Ontario Home Renewal Pro-
gram for Disabled Persons, which
benefits elderly people needing
assistance, will receive $10 million over
The next two years. °
-6. Laid -off workers over the age of "55
will be eligible for retraining assistance
under the Transitions Program, .pendhig
a decision on .Ontario's participation in
the proposed federal.provincial Program
for Older Worker Adjustment (POWA).
At the cbeglmdng of Senior Citizens'
Month, Ontario :Senior Achievement
Awards were presented to older On-
tarians who have -made outstanding con-
--tribuberes-Ate,the life-ofthe-proeince. On -------
June 5, in a ceremony at Queen's Park,
• in the presence of •the Lieutenant -
Governor, the province :honoured the ac-
complishments of 21 outstanding
individuals.
The .government supports seniors who
continue to live creative and challenging
lives after -retirement. Ontario
recognizes the -value of tapping their
-potential and wealth of -knowledge and
eXperience
