Past records of weeds in the field and early seedling identification is . important when choosing the most effec- tive means of control. 1) Be sure the chemical can control your weeds. MCPA or 2,4-D just will not control wild buckwheat or lady's thumb at any rate! 2) Cheek the rate needed and then ,ealibtate.,aur -vrayer to ,;deliver that anfoont. )-Itead any notes available on the labelor in the Guide to Weed Contra 71 to And out how the thmical works. Does It need =idea? Do tawerature extremes cause OW damage? 4) Time your sprioting to env and Weed stages. A young weed is min% easier to conixoL Some crops moth as alfalfa are tolerant to -herbicides only at certain stages'of growth. A well plinned approach to weed con- trol using the right chemical at the right rate at the right stage should give you good weed control. It is you that makes things work. This is the first time that Canada has been host to this conference. The Producer Day was well attended. The importance of a fall rest period in alfalfa was debated and papers were presented on Successful Pasture Management, the value of "My -in -a -Day" and how much protein is actually available to animals from high quality zdfalfa. The highlight of the day was a Forage Spokesperson Com- petition. Ontario was represented by John Markus, Oxford County, last year's Forage Masters Witmer. After attending, 1 think that we can feel reasurred that forage research is continuing and that forages have developed their rightful importance on farm operations. They are valued not only as an excellent livestock feed but also as a nitrogen source to succeeding crops and for their soil conditioning vahie. Our pasture management appears to be ahead of that done in many states.
