Association to
launch special
appeal
The Lung Association is launching a
special fund raising appeal beginning May
-I -advance-thework of rgaiafion-in
research and community programs to help
the many thousands of adults and children
who suffer from asthma The goal for this
campaign in Bruce, Dufferin and Grey
Counties is $25,000.
"It is a fact that approximately one
million Canadians, or four percent of the
population have asthma," states May
Spearin. "In the last 10 years there has been
an upward trend m the death rate due to
asthma. Physicians at the present time can-
not explain why this is happening."
The Lung Association is fighting asthma
on two fronts - medical research and com-
munity programs Medical research has
come a long way in understanding what hap-
pens to the lungs of asthmatics, and how to
treat the disease. It was only four years ago
that asthma was recognized as an inflam-
matory condition. More research is needed
if we are to`fully understand the diseaseand
to find better treatment to help sufferers
cope.
Because of the Lung Association's strong
involvement in the community, a new pro-
gram called AIR FORCE, a program for
asthmatic children and their parents has
been introduced this year. The new program
is a major step in helping children and their
parents cope with asthma.
"It has taken two years to research and
develop the program," states, Marion
McLauchlan, Executive Director. The Lung
Association asthma committee wanted to
produce a program that was innovative, and
would hold the attention of the six to 12 age
group.
The program consists of four main themes
- "What is Asthma? "; Triggers of
Asthma" ; "Treatment of Asthma" and
"Coping with Asthma". Through the use of
cartoons and .characters such as Larry and
Lisa Lung, Ira and Allie Dander, Doc Puffer
and the lovely Asthma, program par-
ticipants embark on a journey that takes
them through each theme.
As memberss of the AIR FORCE Detec-
tive Agency the children participating in the
program investigate asthma ; they find the
clues (or warning signals of their asthma) .
When you are a detective you know what
triggers an attack and you use detective
iogic and skill to come to a better understan-
ding of the importance of taking medicine
correctly - and most important being able to
"report" this information to others.
Children who attend the AIR FORCE
Asthma Program will be -able to manage
their own asthma more effectively.
Parents also participate by attending
short lectures, demonstrations and group
discussions. Guest speakers add their
knowledge to the program.
The AIR FORCE Asthma Program is a
special program for asthmatic children and
their parents. "We want to help these
children lead active fuller lives," says
Marion McLauchlan. The AIR FORCE
Asthma Program is designed to make this
possible. Please give generously to this
special appeal. You can help those one
million families breathe easier. fit

ITIS NOT STRANGE
—That so many rich people look unhappy.
—That so many famous people have great
troubles.
—That so many styles have to change so
quickly.
—That memory so easily becomes a haun-
ting ghost.
—That unmastered passion becomes such
a tyrannical master.
—That money is capable of buying so little
real pleasure.
