"Recently, we have been flooded with news that portrays the hazards of pesticide use. Well here is some information that the media are not quick to pick up on. Du. Bruce Ames, Chairman, Department of Biochemistry, University of California, and world relmowned cancer specialist has published some work ranking -possible carcinogenic hazards of normal exposure to pesticides compared to naturally oceur- ing carcinogens in food and our environ- ment. The study, also evaluated by the American Medical Association and Na- tional Cancer institute says that Diet Cola is 200 times more toxic than DDT given normal 'human exposure to both products with respect to cancer risks, and similarly the normal use of beer is close to 10,000 times more toxic and comfrey herb tea is 100timesmore toxic than normal exposure to DDT. The substances under review by Dr. HERP 96 Ames are compared based on the extent to which people are likely to be expo to therm in the normal course of their day to day living habits. The seale is called the Human Exposure dose/Rodent Potency dose or. The values are not risk assessments but they do provide a way to compare the possible hazards of normal exposure levels. Farmers know that the judicious use of crop protection materials can exist -safely in agriculture and is essential to meet the demands of consumers for high quality food products at low prices. Dr. Ames' researob indicates that the carcinogenic hazar one most 'pesticides are trivial compared to some common food products and we may be diverting too much of our attention to pesticides and away from im- portant public health concerns such as smoking, alcohol, saturated fats and AIDS. There are enough problems infarm- ing right now and protection from and positive reaction to completely biased, one-sided reports against crop protection materials is required.
