PI c a man" 9 challenged A comment made last week by The Sen- tinel's advertising manager gave me this week's idea for my column. Every Monday afternoon, the poor ad guy is asked "'Well, how many pages this week Torre?" The number of pages in the paper is determin by the amount of advertising sold and sometimes we editorial types would ,like to have more space to accommodate all' the news and pictures we have. Tom remarked, "boy since you've been editor, all you ever want is more space, more space ! " That remark reallybothered me all night (don't believe everything you read here ) and.a 1ittle.germ ofan idea startedtin my 'head. Why nothave Tom =charge jobs withinfor:aneweek.Even tetterwhynot the threeofuschange jobssothat each one of us could really understand what the other is.going through. Of course, 1 would have it the easiest, seeing :as I Lave on :numerous occasions .been called upon to sell .and .design ads, when`Tom was on holidays. I wasn't crazy aboutsales, but I:gotthrough it without too many problems. Changing with Marg would .be no pro- blem as I just handed over those reins four months ago. My evil little mind is really most in- terested in having Tom do the editorial work for a week, Ann by Pat -Livingston colours. }Ie has lots of experience - with printing and developing pictures. He cats even handle a camera. Of course 1'd be sure he had at least three evening assignments and two on Saturday. And yes he would have to write the dreaded editorial for that week, plus a eol- umn to fill my Ramblings space. Then 1 would be sure to have him called, on what he thought was si free evening, with a "we forgot to phone you earlier, but we'd really appreciate you coming to take this picture tonight, right away." 1 wonder how ''he reacts to late 'Monday night or early Tuesday morning calls that start out, "uh, 1 forgot to phone my classified ad In, you take stand make sure iit.gets in this we'ek's paper." I canseewhystardngpeopleatthe "bot- tom of the ladder" in corporations could' be advantageous to everyone. As,you worked your way up you should be able to identify with the problems of others in every department. 1 =rave issued my challenge to Tons regarding changing jobs for one week, but after 'his reply, 1 really felt it best to con- tinue on with the trials and tribulations of being editor and continue listening to his good-natured ribbing each Monday, when l say, "how many pages this week Tom?" H { April 27 was a day I was looking forward to with anticipation and dread. "A" day marked 21 years of married bliss. "B" day was supposed to be budget day - trust the .government to mess it up, by so- meone leaking the budget info ahead of time ! To begin with 1 don't think he can type - maybe using the two finger method, which could prove very slow going. I'd love to sit him in front of my Mini Disc Terminal, give him a quick lesson on the merhanics of it and say, "ok, next week we will have a 24 page paper, can you fill it?"
