Education Minister :Chris Ward told delegates to the Ontario Association for Curriculunn Development .annual eon- ferenc . in London that the reviews will be conducted at the Grade 8, IB.and .12 levels. "I :believe our Provincial Reviews in math will help focus new attention on the teaching ,of this important subject, and contribute to .improvement in student per- formance," Ward said. The Grade 8 mathematics review will provide detailed information about achievement of students at the end of their elementary .schooling The Grade 10 general level review will provide a :picture of achievement in the fundamentals of mathematics for students, most of whom will be'specialii- ing in mathematics for business or mathematics for .technology .after Grade 10. The Grade 12 review will indicate the degree of :achievement in advanced level mathematics by Grade 12 students, many of whorls are bound for university. Provincial Reviews are designed to assess student •achievement province -wide and provide information for program im- provement at theboard and school level. The .ministry's Provincial Reviews are based on a sample of 100 English and 1100 1 rench=language schools throughout the province. In addition, school boards are in- vited to participate en a voluntary basis to obtain confidential results for their boards and for each of their schools. The reviews were started in 1987 follow- ing the recommendation of a provincial advisory committee on evaluation policies and practices. Results of the Canadian Studies Geography review, a pilot project carried out in the 1987, were released in May of 1988. Results of the 1987=88 reviews in °ad- vanced level chemistry and physics will be released later this spring. Currently, reviews are under way in Grade 8 reading and mathematics. Results will be released during the 198940 school year. Sixteen tables play euchre The Whitechurch Women's Institute held a Dessert Euchre on Monday April :24. Sixteen tables were in play. Prizes were high ladies Catherine Camp- bell, second high was Hazel Bateman. Herb Clayton •won high for the men, with a draw between Clarence Cunningharrn and Nell Johnston playing as a man for second high with Clarence winning:the draw. The draw prize was ;won by Mary Helm.
