Three math
urses slated far review
The IViinistry Education Nail conduct
Provincial Reviews in three mathematics
courses -=during .the next school year.
Education Minister :Chris Ward told
delegates to the Ontario Association for
Curriculunn Development .annual eon-
ferenc . in London that the reviews will be
conducted at the Grade 8, IB.and .12 levels.
"I :believe our Provincial Reviews in
math will help focus new attention on the
teaching ,of this important subject, and
contribute to .improvement in student per-
formance," Ward said.
The Grade 8 mathematics review will
provide detailed information about
achievement of students at the end of their
elementary .schooling
The Grade 10 general level review will
provide a :picture of achievement in the
fundamentals of mathematics for
students, most of whom will be'specialii-
ing in mathematics for business or
mathematics for .technology .after Grade
10.
The Grade 12 review will indicate the
degree of :achievement in advanced level
mathematics by Grade 12 students, many
of whorls are bound for university.
Provincial Reviews are designed to
assess student •achievement province -wide
and provide information for program im-
provement at theboard and school level.
The .ministry's Provincial Reviews are
based on a sample of 100 English and 1100
1 rench=language schools throughout the
province. In addition, school boards are in-
vited to participate en a voluntary basis to
obtain confidential results for their boards
and for each of their schools.
The reviews were started in 1987 follow-
ing the recommendation of a provincial
advisory committee on evaluation policies
and practices.
Results of the Canadian Studies
Geography review, a pilot project carried
out in the 1987, were released in May of
1988. Results of the 1987=88 reviews in °ad-
vanced level chemistry and physics will be
released later this spring.
Currently, reviews are under way in
Grade 8 reading and mathematics. Results
will be released during the 198940 school
year.
