I have chosen to compare Nellie Mc-
Clung to Emily Stowe. I am using the
following criteria, personal facts or
characteristics, specific contributions and
the importance of contributions.
Emily Stowe of Brantford, Ontario -was -a
hard worker. She was born into a Quaker
family and at the age of 15 she began
teaching .school in Norwich Ontario and
soon became a principal at the Brantford
school. She really wanted to be a doctor
but the University ofToronto would not ac-
cept her because she was a woman. She
later went to the United States to learn
medicine and later returned to Canada and
opened a clinic where women who were
shy .about discussing their medical.,pro-
blems with men came 'Thirteen 'years
later the law was changed and women
were allowed the right to attend Canadian
medical schools. In 1876, she and other
women organized the Toronto Women's
Literary. Club. They discussed the lack of
rights for women and wanted women to
‘havethe same rights as men. Later in 1917,
with clot of hard -work, women were allow-
ed to vote. She later established the On-
tario Medical College for Women. Later
Emily was accepted at the University of
Toronto Emily Stowe died at the age of 72
.and should be remembered for what she
did.
Nellie McClung of Chatsworth, Ontario,
wasthe youngest of her.family. In 1880, she

The It.arishea's Women's Institute had
their regular meeting on February 16 at
our Lucknow School library. They had a
tour of the school and Mr. Pike explained
his views on teaching today.
The ladies were served lunch by the
Grade 8 Family Studies class under the.
supervision of teacher Miss Matte.
The Institute members awarded prizes
to the winners of the Recycling Poster con-
test. It was an enjoyable afternoon for all.
This past Christmas season we had a
chance to share our music with the com-
munity. It took place in the Lucknow Com-
munity Centre. Mr. Cailey and Mr. Pike
organized the concert. We were joined by
Brookside Choir and Ukulele Band. The
Lucknow School Choir, the Lucknow Band
and the Lucknow Christian School Choir.
The whole evening was to help the needy in
lour area. Donations were given which
'made many families in the area happy.
The night helped us share the joy of the
season.

and her family moved to Manitoba. She
became a school teacher. Nellie liked her
work but she thought it was exhausting.
She got married and was forced to unit
teaching. She became an author and made
$25,000. She joined The Christian
Temperance Union. This group was
against alcohol and tried to get rid of it.
Since women weren't allowed to vote at
that time, Nellie did everything in her
power to get them to change the law about
women's rights. She worked at it and soon
the law was changed. She then moved to
Alberta and was elected to the Alberta
legislature, she also became a Governor of
the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
Nellie McClung died .at the age of 18. Nellie
Will 'be -remembered for what she :did.
I think both women worked really hard
at what they accomplished and deserve to
be remembered.
