WHAT REMEMBRANCE DAY
MEANS TO ME-.
As soon as I hear the two words Remem-
brance Day, I instantly think of the red
poppies that grow in Flanders Fields and
all of the soldiers that fought for peace and
freedom.
Remembrance Day is a Canadian holi-
day in memory of the men and women that
fought and died for us.
Remembrance Day is every November
11th. Remembrance Day replaced Ar-
mistice Day in 1931. The poppy that grows
in Flanders Fields is a symbol of Remem-
brance Day.
The assassination of Archduke Ferdi-
nand triggered the first World War. World
War I started in 1914 and ended in 1918.
World War II began in 1939 and ended in
1945. Some weapons in World War I were
the airplane, tank, machine gun and the
submarine.
Some soldiers wore gas masks.
The weapons used in World War II were
the spitfire, the 1347, the DUKW, the tank
and the aircraft carrier.
That's what Remembrance Day means
to me.

Remember
Remember the soldiers that fought in wars
Past
who gave their lives up for us, alas
they fought and fought for days on end
the end of the war was the end for them
now they're in heaven where war may not
enter
where peace and harmony dwell in the
center
adults and children were killed in the mess
the world has no place for such foolishness
so, on the eleventh month
the eleventh day
the eleventh hour
we remember.

Live ionger, don't smoke
by Tammy Schaus
Would you like a cigarette? I don't, I
want to live.
Mr. McKeon and fellow classmates. Did
you know last year alone lung cancer was
the result of 72,000 deaths. A person every
105 seconds dies of diseases and illness
relating to smoking.
Why do people start to 'smoke? Well,
some think it makes them look glamorous,
some start just for the heck of it. Then
there are others who start because it helps
them feel poised and sophisticated. Then
there are people who start just to defy
their parents because they don't get
enough attention at home. Last but not
least, the big one is they think it is the
grown-up thing to do but it is not at all.
You know a smoker's risk of dying
before their time is 70% higher than a non-
smoker. Men who start in their teens will
die long before their time, women run a
similar, but lower risk. The younger peo-
ple start, the more risk they have of lung
diseases and heart attacks before their
30's and 40's. Being sick with these il-
lnesses and diseases is a result of 77
million workdays of people being away.
Out of all the generations of mankind,
our parents' generation has the most
smokers. Back then little information was
available about the connection between
smoking and health. Well really back then
smoking was Thought of as a harmless
pastime. But today's medical research
shows that smoking was not as harmless
as they thought, it is really responsible for
thousands of deaths.
Scientists believe that cigarette smoking
can contribute to the development of

arteriosclerosis which is the hardening of
the arteries.
Many people in our country have the
disease of the arteries in the arms and
legs. Smoking is very dangerous for these
patients, because smoking narrows the
h
blood vessels already damaged. Smoking
increases this disease's progress for final
stages which are gangrene, amputation of
the limb and of course death.
Nature provides us all with a normal
respiratory system with a self -cleansing
action which can protect us from harmful
substances. Tobacco smoke inhaled with a
mixture of gases, tar and irritants can
cause the cleansing action of the
respiratory system to slow down and in
time finally stop the respiratory system.
The death rate for heart attacks is
definitely higher for cigarette smokers.
Most diseases underlie heart attacks. The
causes are mainly other disorders of the
body such as lung cancer, breast cancer et
cetera. But the death rate, from heart at-
tacks may decrease if more people give up
smoking..
Did you know that people are trying to
quit smoking right now but it is not as easy
as they thought. People who smoked for
over 20 years find it very difficult to quit
smoking but a lot of them have managed.
Most of all, doctors have quit smoking
because it would be a bad influence for the
t mItsits if they were smote anc t eir
tients were trying to quit.
If you quit smoking in time, some of your
body tissues might return to normal.
So if you have a future planned out for
yourself, I would advise you not to smoke
or you will probably never meet your
destination.

the cat
He walks in silence trough the night,
With padded feet he roams.
To catch a mouse, in silent flight,
And then to take it home.
When morning comes, he will lie down,
In a curled up sprawling heap.
And then he'll purr and quietly,
Purr himself to sleep.
