Awareness "overkill"
The month of April saw the public overwhelmed with nearly -every
—weak mariced tomD e a campaign of some_type or another.
We had National Wildlife Week, Local .Government Week, National
Child Safety Week, National Soil Conservation Week, Tornado
Awareness Day. Education Week, and Cancer Society month.
National Wildlife Week is declared such to promote the conservation
of Canada's wildlife and wildlife habitat.
Local Government Week gave the public the chance to participate in
events planned.by their local government and learn more about the
roles, responsibilities and functions of their local government.
The secondNational Child :Safety Week aimed to draw -the :attention
of government, industry and _consumers to °their ..shared responsibility
in product safety issues.
National Soil Conservation Weak, supported by Agriculture Canada,
is a way to focus public :attention on the state of the nation's soil and
combat .soil degradation by helping society recognize the problems.
Tornado Awareness Day was an attempt to educate Ontario's public
about tornadoes and how they :can help themselves.
Education Week encouraged co-operation and resource sharing bet-
ween schools, businesses, the -community and :parents
The Cancer :Society campaign month promotes .greater public
awareness •of. what can be done in the prevention, early diagnosis and
control of cancer.
All of these campaigns are important to our society - no one will
'argue,that point.
.Aware is defined as "on one's guard; vigilant; knowing or realizing;
conscious; informed."
One would have to wonder at how vigilant. knowledgeable or con-
scious society can be on any of the above, when in one month they are
bombarded with this many ".spacial" weeks or days.
is the purpose of each of these campaigns obliterated due to overuse
of this type of :promotion? Perhaps. But until someone comes up with a
better idea, we can -expect more of the same. Pl.
Lethargy has
set in
The last few weeks - that lousy time bet-
ween winter leaving and spring really ar-
riving - has induced torpor to my 01' body.
Don't panic - I am not suffering from some
new disease, I'm simply feeling lethargic,
sluggish and generally tired.
Now I'm not the only one feeling this
way. A few of my lunch buddies have the
same symptoms. After stuffing our faces,
we generally compare notes on how we are
feeling that day. Really boring lunch con-
versation, but we are trying to deterimine
what is causing this general state of
stupor.
Having come to no conclusion, I
remembered that old saying about when a
woman was feeling depressed she ran out
and purchased a new hat. Well instead of
buying hats I decided I would try a new
hair do.
Generally when I get my golden locks
tended to, I don't give my hairdresser free
rein, but this time I did. I walked in and
said, "give me something .different,
something to perk me up." Making a state-
ment like this could lead one to having
nightmares for sometime, but she kept her
styling expertise to the conservative side,
befitting an editorial type of my age. I was
quite pleased with the results, and com-
riet KINGS

mented "now give me a new face and body
and I'm all set."
Apparently she didn't feel she could do
much with the face or the body, as I left
with just a new hairstyle. Well, it was a
start!
After giving it much consideration, I
realized there wasn't much I could do with
the face. It's the one I was born with, and
afterall Mr. Fixit has looked at it for some
20 plus years and I wouldn't want to give
him too much of a shock, by turning up
minus those bags under the eyes. I mean,
if I lost that excess baggage, he might feel
compelled to do the same.
Finance was another reason I decided to
keep the face I have. As you know,
editorial types don't make enough to run
off to some spa and be pampered fora cou-
ple of weeks, while the scars from the
facelift are healing, but what an idea that
is. I wonder if I could talk my boss into in-
cluding a week at a spa as part of my
b en e f i t s.
My next thoughts were on the body. As
spring approaches, almost everyone takes
a look at the other excess baggage that has
collected over the winter. With removal of
the heavy clothing, dawns the realization

The Markets - "The -hog mystery" is the
term lately applied to the ever advancing
price of hogs. This week the Toronto price
for hogs, fed and watered, is at a new high
level, $21.75 per cwt., and there is nothing
tosuggest a decline. A few weeks ago when
the U.S. Food Administration1.announced
the removal of the guarantee of 017.50,
there was something of a;panic lest prices
should .slump backward to the modest
figures•oi pre-war days. But nothing of the
kind rhgppened. Hogs went right on climb-
ing."Tlie real cause of the advance does not
appear4to be understood by anybody. Some
blame the packers; but the packers say
they have not now so large a margin as
they ;had 'during the war. They say the
buyers; are :boosting.the market. They say
further that it would suit them if the home
trade were cut off altogether as they could
ship to the English ,market.
The cattle market is also strong and
there ,is an upward tendency in butter and
eggs.

= The owner of .a pinball arcade in Lucknow
says she hasnot heard any remarks from
local people indicating they don't want her
business in the vile.
Catherine Dodson, Ripley said people
have come to her since the negative
reports in the newspaper and on television,
to tell her they are pleased with the type of
entertainment her business provides.
The arcade is located in the old Silver -
wood's building on the corner of Campbell
Streeet and Bruce County Road L It has
been open for business for about one
month.
The arcade has pinball machines and
pool tablas. Mrs. Dodson said she does not
allow the younger children to play pool
because they cannot shoot pool or play the
game at their age.
She said she closes at 1Op.m. through the
week because high school students have
school the next day and she feels 10 pan. is
late enough for them to be out on a school
night.
