McNAY
William Kelso McNay, formerly of
Ashfield Township, Huron County (RR 3
Lucknow) passed away on Monday, April
10, 1989 at Pinecrest Manor, Lucknow,
where he had been a resident since
December, 1985. Ironically, this was the
same day his grandfather, William
McNay, a native of Scotland, died in 1905.
The eldest of three sons, William Kelso
was born at his home, N1 Lot 1, Conc. 13,
on April 16, 1899 to Alexanderina (Lexie)
Graham and Peter Ramsay McNay.
A third generation fanner, who enjoyed
the good earth and "God's fresh air", Mr.
McNay appreciated the beauty of nature
and the environment. In his retirement
years, he spent many hours in the garden.
In 11921, Mr. McNay went west with the
harvest excursion. He later attended the
first Royal Winter Fair in Toronto.
During the 1950s and the 1960s he served
as a director for Ashfield Township with
the Federation of Agriculture. In 1970,
Kelso toured Russia with a Farm Group
operated through CKNX Wingham.
In the initial stages of forming the
Wingham and District Community Living
Association, Mr. McNay was actively in-
volved and was a founding member, on the
Board of Directors. He was also a founding
member of the Lucknow and District Lions
Club...
A life member of the Royal Canadian
Legion, Branch 309, Lucknow, Comrade
Kelso served in World War I seeing action
in. Belgium and France. A past officer,
Kelso also served on the Executive Com-
mittee. He was the last surviving veteran
of W.W.I of Branch'309.
During the span of his life, Mr. McNay
devoted much time to his family and
religion. A member of the Lucknow United
Church of Canada, he served several
terms as an elder on the Session..
On. April 14, 1938, William Kelso and
Mary Adelina Proctor Watson, Reg. N. of
Ailsa Craig were married in Toronto by
Mary's uncle, the Rev. Dr. David Best.
Mr. McNay was the dear father of
Beverley and his wife Jackie, RR 3,
Lucknow; Joyce, Waterloo; Eleanor and
her husband, Douglas Garbutt,
Mississauga; Helen and her husband
Terry Baker, Kitchener; Evelyn,
Wingham
He will be fondly missed .by eight grand-
children:, Heather and Amber Baker,
Kristen and Kyle Garbutt, Peter, Craig,
Kendra and Erin McNay.
He is .also survived by a brother,
Graham of Ottawa, cousins, nieces,
nephews and in-laws.
Mr. McNay was predeceased by his
wife, Mary in 1983, his twin daughter,
Elaine in 1979, his brother, Alexander in
1985, a sister in infancy and his parents,
Alexanderina and Peter McNay.
Friends paid their respects at the
MacKenzie and McCreath Funeral Home
under the direction of Joan Pollard. On
Tuesday, April 11, the Royal Canadian
Legion Branch 309 conducted its service in
memory of Comrade Kelso. On Wednes-
day, Apr. 12, at 3:30, the funeral service
was conducted by Rev. Douglas Kaufman
and Rev. Gerald McFarlane, with Mrs.
Donald Scott, organist rendering some of
Kelso's favourite tunes: "Amazing
Grace", and "Onward Christian Soldiers".
Everyone sang Kelso's favourite, "What a
Friend We Have in Jesus".
Pallbearers were Murray Henderson, a
neighbour; Donald and Kenneth McNay,
nephews; Lionel Harvey, Douglas Gar-
butt, Terry Baker, sons-in-law.
Flower bearers were Peter McNay,
Kristen Garbutt and Amber Baker.
Spring .interment will take place in South
Kinloss Cemetery.
William George Ross
Bill Ross of Lucknow, a retired farmer,
passed away on April 9, 1989 in Wingham
and District Hospital, in his 81st year.
Mr. Boss was a member of the Lucknow
Presbyterian Church and an elder of the
church.
He was .born in Ashfield Township, ,on
October 27, 1908, a son of the late Roderick
Ross and Margaret MacKenzie. Mr. Ross
was the last surviving member of his
family.
Mr. Ross is survived by a son, Doug and
his wife Barb, of Lucknow, ,and.a daughter,
Audrey and her husband, Lou Barry of
Woodbridge; as well as three grand-
children, several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, the
former Edna Ritchie, four sisters and five
brothers.
Visitation was at the MacKenzie and Mc-
Creath Funeral Home, Lucknow, from
where the funeral service was conducted
on April 12, by Rev. A. Ramsay of the
Lucknow Presbyterian Church.
Flower bearers were Darryn Barry,
Lance Sanderson and Doug Helm.
Pallbearers were Cliff Mann, Rick
Passmore, Allan Hackett, Barry Hackett,
Tom Helm and Art Helm.
Spring interment in Greenhill Cemetery,
Lucknow.
Gerry Herman Meurs
Gerry Meurs of R. 1, Ripley passed away
in Cambridge Hospital, on April 7, 1989 at
the age of 19 years.

OBITUARIES
Mr. Meurs was a member of the
Lucknow Christian Reformed Church and
was attending Conestoga College in
Waterloo.
He was born in Wingham on August 31,
1969 to Gerrit and Sylvia (Algera) Meurs,
of R. 1, Ripley.
Besides his parents, Gerry is survived
by a sister Marian and her husband
George Snieder of Clinton; a brother, Jack
at home; and a sister, Nathalie of
Goderich. He is also survived by a niece
and nephew, Catherine and Kevin Snieder.
Gerry was predeceased by twin sisters.
Visitation was held at the MacKenzie
and McCreath Funeral Home, Lucknow.
The funeral service was conducted from
the Lucknow Christian Reformed Church
on April 11, by Rev. Tom Baird. Gerda
Burgsma was organist.
Flower bearers were Will Vannie jen
Huis, Wayne Burgsma, Kevin DeJong and
Richard Askes.
Pallbearers were Steve DeJong, John
Vandervelde, Jim Jurjens, Jeff Burgsma,
Dave Sjaarda and Harvey Kikkert.
Interment in South Kinloss Cemetery.
Dorothea Cairns Birch
Dorothea (nee MacDonald) Birch of
Toronto died on Thursday, April 13, 1989.
She was the wife of the late Walter
James Birch of Toronto, mother of Walter
Thomas Birch, Toronto, sister of the late
Thomas Arthur MacDonald, Dartmouth,
N.S. ; daughter of the late Thelma Cairns
MacDonald and Thomas Archibald Mac-
Donald of Lucknow.
No funeral service was held. Cremation.
