A west coast cold snap is threatening the
annual April fundraising drive to fight
cancer.
Cool, wet weather in B.C. has delayed
the spring daffodil crop, which puts the
local Canadian Cancer Society fundrais-
ing drive at least a week behind schedule.
"We're beginning to question whether
we'll get the daffodils at all this year,"
says the society's Huron County public
relations coordinator.
Dorothy Venkiteswaren said Monday
most of the counties annual daffodil fun-
draising events, including Saturday after-
noon's Daffodil Tea at Victoria St. United
Church in Goderich, will proceed even
without the daffodils.
"We're hoping the people will contribute
anyway." said Venkiteswaren.
Last year, Huron County residents pur-
chased 6,000 bunches of daffodils, which
raised more than $15,200 toward the socie-
ty's research and other programs. Na-
tionally, six million daffodils were sold,
raising $1.8 million.
The little yellow flowers, which have
become symbolic of thebattle against the
disease, were to have been available this
weekend for sale in malls, businesses and
at fundraising events. Delivery of presold
bunches, mall bookings and other events
must now be replanned throughout
Southwestern Ontario.
The daffodils are now expected to be
available April 21 and 12.
Despite delays, Venkiteswaren said
local society workers still hope to sell 6,600
bunches and raise more than $16,000 in
Huron County.

Whitechurch residents
present petition to council
Two representatives from the village of
Whitechurch attended the Kinloss council
meeting on April 3 and presented a petition
concerning alledged .violations of zoning
bylaws, whereby junk is being stored con-
trary to the zoning bylaw.
Council has instructed the bylaw officer
to persue all means - to correct these
violations.
Apparently dogs have been running at
large in the village of Whitechurch and the
clerk was authorized to write a letter on
behalf of council to residents in the village
in this regard, with the letter to to be
delivered by the bylaw enforcement
officer.
Council passed bylaw 64989 which in-
creased the fee for building permits to a
minimum fee of $20:00 plus $2.00 per thou-
sand or portion thereof of the estimated
cost after the first $1,000.
Clerk Frank Hawthorne is to contact
Paul Zurbrig of Associated Realty Con-
sultants to determine the value of lands
which have the potential of being purchas-
ed as buffer lands for the township waste
disgosaT site.
The township has agreed to accept the
charges from Ontario Hydro to install a
light at the intersection of county road one
and county road six at the hamlet of
Holyrood, also to pay yearly maintenance
and operating costs of $62.66 per year.
The 1988 financial statements for the
township were approved in March by coun-
cil, as presented by a representative of
Pannell Kerr MacGillivray, chartered
accountants.
