,Liive to take
On 'aturday, Apr11 1, the Lucknow
Novice hockey team travelled to Mount
Forest to participate in the year ending
W.O.A.A. 'Novice House League Cham-
pionship Tournament. They had earlier
qualified for this tourney by finishing their
group playoffs in second place with a nine
win, three loss record.
Lueknow vs' -Walkerton
`]('heir first game was against Walkerton
and the‘toys'soon showed that they had
come to '.play some hockey. .Ean Moffat
opened thescoring at 1:11 of the first with
Craig Moffat earning the assist.
This quick goalseemed to inspire the
whole team and Shane Petteplace poked
an Ean'Moffatrebound into the net at 2:31
of the same period.
Walkertonscored half way through the
second, ,setting -up an excitingthirdperiod.
The whole team played excellent defen-
sive hockey and allowed Walkerton only.a
handful of shots on -goal from that point
forward.
Jonathan MacKinnon scored into an
empty .net frorn Craig Moffat and Chad
Freernanin the final minute. An excellent
team effort earned the boys a 3-1 win and
they were on their way to the champion-
ship round.
Lucknow vs Harriston
The second game was against a big Har-
riston squad and L3cknow w at

Lueknow vs 'Fergus
The championship game was played
against a very strong and fast skating
team frorn Fergus. 'he local boys came
out ready again and matched this team
stride for stride and worked on slowing
them down with some strong checking.
Fergus opened the scoring early in the
game but Lucknow just started working
even `harder and shut this smooth skating
team down to a walk.
Led by defensemen Greg Courtney,
Ryan Hackett, Brent Cameron and
Cameron Moffat, with some strong zone
clearing; good goaltending by Jay J and
excellent backehecking by the forwards,
the score was kept at 1 - 0 until the third
period
Early in the third, Brent Cameron again
took off up icewith the puck, but was foiled
by a good save by the Fergus goalie,
however, Ean Moffat was right.there to
knock in the rebound.
At the five minute of the third, a Brent
Cameron pass put Jonathan MacKinnon on
e breakway and he made ne mistake scor-
ing on -a good low shot.
Fergus really started to put on the
pressure which finally resulted in a goal
from a goalmouth_scramble to tie the score
at 2 - 2 with five minutes to go.
Lucknow boys dug down deep and show -
mg big hearts and strong determination
as ,Li t:ola- -- matched Fergus' th mg .play—to eentl
siderable size disadvantage, but the boys
were .not intimidated and again played
some strong hockey.
Shane Petteplace opened the scoring
halfway :through the first period, again
knocking an Ean Moffat rebound into the
net.
Midway in the second period, _Brent
Caneron, gathered .up a loose puck in the
. iuckrnow, zone :and -raced the bill .length of
the. ice to score Lucknow's second goal :
Barriston soered early inthe" third to -set
up_a:nail biting fish. .
Both .teams had ,good scoring chances
during:the-rest D€the.gameewith_Lucknow
goalie Jay 3. Humphrey coming up with a
couple of super saves to help preserve the
lead. Lucknow held on with, the final score
2 -1.in theiriavour. This win -put the team
into the champinship final
regulation time tied at two.
This sent the game into an exciting over-
time period, whicWfeatured end to end ac-
tion as both teams were determined to be
champs.
Lucknow's Craig Moffat finally relieved
the tension scoring on an =excellent high
shot from a difficult angle with only 35
seconds left to play in the first overtime.
This.gave 1 nr'know a bard fought .3 - 2 win
and the W.C:A.A.:championship!
A very tired, but very happy bunch of
boys carried a well deserved °trophy and
banner home to their arena for display.
'The boys certainly deserved this -.trophy,
displaying great heart and drive
throughout their playoffs, capping it off
with an excellent day's work against some
very tough competition.
