HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Lucknow Sentinel, 1989-04-05, Page 3ApriIl 7 has been marked Tornado
Awareness Day and the Ministry of the
Solicitor General has the followiug protec-
tive measures residents should take.
Weather Watches
and Warnings
Environment Canada issues weather
watches and warnings whey anticipated
weather poses a threat to public safety.
This information is relayed to the public by
radio and television.
A severe weather watch is issued up to
six hours in advance to alert the general
public that, for a specified portion of On-
tario, there is a high potential for
dangerous thunderstorm weather, which
may be accompanied by a tornado. -
A severe weather warning is issued to
alert the public that severe thunderstorms
or tornadoes are imminent in the warning
area — ie, a severe thunderstorm is in pro-
gress or expected to occur within two
hours.
Tornado Safety Hints
A personal tornado awareness program
should include:
-being aware of the weather, knowing the
radio or television stations which broad-
cast up-to-the-minute weather information
-knowing the name by which Environment
s
Canada refers to your forecast region
when they issue weather forecasts.
-reviewing your plans of action.
Whena tornado threatens
1. Stay away from windows, doors and out-
side walls. Protect you head.
2. For maximum safety, go down to the
basement or seek shelter under a stairway
or sturdy table, or in a closet.
3. Try to reach the centre of the house or
the side away frorn the storm.
4. Avoid buildings with large areas of un-
supported roof, including arenas, barns or
supermarkets. Iff caught in such a
building, seek out the lowest floor, an in-
side hallway or small interior windowless
room, or get under something sturdy.
5. If caught in the open, try to determine
the tornado's direction of travel and move
at right angles to it. If you cannot avoid the
storm, find a ditch, ravine or other depres-
sion and lie flat. Do not remain in your car.
Many people have been killed trying to
ride out a tornado in their car.
6. If no shelter can be found, hang on to the
base of a small tree or shrub.
7. Remember that damaged and weakened
structures, fallen debris, downed hydro
wires, and gas leaks are potential dangers
after a storm has passed.
ARTICLE NO. 2
This month, I'd like to talk about some
BASIC FACTS. Firstly, A.I.D.S. is an
acronym for Acquired Immune Deficiency
Syndrome. .-
Acquired - refers to .the fact that people
normally have an intact immune system.
However, once infected with H.I.V.
(Human Immuno -deficiency Virus), it ap-
pears that the immune system gradually
breaks down. A.I.D.S. is not an inherited
or genetic condition.
Immune deficiency - refers to the fact
that the infected individual's immune
system - the body's defense, is gradually
weakened or destroyed. Thus, the infected
person becomes vulnerable to serious in-
fections that can be fatal.
Syndrome - refers to the fact that the
disease results in a recognizable set of
head problems 'which msually occur
together.
"A.I.D.S:" is .really the term .used. .:to
denote the final, fatal. stage of the disease
caused by H.I.V. infection. Befpre.a person
progresses to "full-blown A.I.D.S." they
generally have passed through 'several
other stages first. •These inay include :
(1) Initial H.I.V. infection, often with no
signs or symptoms. The 4nfected in-
dividual may look and feel well.
(2) Persistent generalized lym-
phadenopathy (PGL) presents when the
lymph glands in the neck, armpit and/or
groin are swollen.
(3) Generalized symptoms of varying
degrees of severity and timing. These may
include: drenching night sweats, fatigue,
diarrhea, mild fever that may come and

go, unplanned weight loss.
(4) Neurolgieal disorders and dementia
are very often seen in H.I.V. infected in-
dividuals This includes such problems as
depression, memory loss, impaired men-
tal and motor functions, apathy, confusion,
being unable to .think or speak, incon-
tinence, spasms and blindness.
Up until the final stage of H.I.V. infec-
tion, "full-blown A.I.D.S.", the signs and
symptoms tend to be general in nature and
could easily be found in many other condi-
tions. However, at this point the immune
system is so weakened that it cannot fight
off ,many infections that it normally dealt
.with successfully.
(5) -0 -Full -Blown A.LD.fi." is ,hallmarked
'by the contracting of .one or more, of these
"opportunistic" :infections or.cancers,_the
two most common being pneumocystis
'carinii pneumonia (PCP) and -Kaposi's
sarcoma (KS) .
Thus, it is not the A.I.D.S. virus itself
that kills,.:but rather the opportunistic in-
fections and rare cancers.
Please watch ,for A.I.D.S. This Month -
