Bruce Presbyterial 27th meeting
Over 200 women gathered in the Port
Elgin United Church March 6, for the 27th
annual meeting of the Bruce Presbyterial
United Church Women. The theme for the
day was Foundation for Living.
The ladies were welcomed to the
meeting by Bruce Presbyterial president,
Laura Williams and the Port Elgin UCW
president; Lorna Coley.
Guests were present from sister chur-
ches in Port Elgin - Bricker Street Baptist,
Anglican, Latter Day Saints and Tomie
' Presbyterian; Hamilton Conference
UCW ;Erie and Waterloo Presbyterials.
The 1990 annual meeting will be held in
Palmerston.
The Bible study was conducted by Rev.
Margaret Bain of Hanover, who led the
gathering though the building of a house
and a life, from the foundation up. No step
in the building can be missed, each step is
important. The foundation must be strong
enough to support the entire house, be a re-
taining wall against the outside, and
shelters the basement. Rev. Bain likened
the footings of the building to the touch of
Jesus in our life; the cement mixture being
bound by faith and the Holy Spirit; the
rooms above the ground as centres of lear-
ning; den for study, bedroom for solitude
and rest, family for for co-operation. She
concluded that it was not good enough just
to build the foundation and house. We can't
stay inside the house, we must go out into
the community and world - continue as you
have learned.
The afternoon session included a lively
sing song and various items of business
were dealt with. The day's offering . was
given to the Ontario Association of
C.G.I.T. and the . Women's Interaith
counci.
A film titled, "See You Snday?" was us-
ed to introduce discussion groups on the
theme. Many interesting and varied
responses were brought to the meeting. If
each one of us would do one little part to br-
ing someone out to meeting`s or church,
what a difference it would make.
The election of officers was conducted
by Mae Doerr, president of Hamilton Con-
ference U.C.W. and Rev. Margaret Bain
installed the officers.
Special music during the day was pro-
vided by some young people of the church
with musical instruments. The In
Memorian service was led by Pike Bay
U.C.W.
Rev. Gordon Williams of Port Elgin
United Church officiated at the closing
communion service.

members then tied two quilts which were
donated to people who had lost their homes
by fire. A good deal of progress was made
on sewing together squares for a third quilt
top. -
February was Heart Month and
members canvassed part of the town for
contributions to the Heart and Stroke
Foundation. Following the canvass,
members returned .to the town hall to
discuss business matters. Ideas were
entertained for the Fall Fair Group

Susan McNaughton and Marian
McFarlane hosted the Lucknow Women's
Institute March meeting, which was held
in the town hall.
President, Dorothy Brown presided over
the business part of the meeting, opening
with a St. Patrick's poem.
The rollcall was "waste not, want not;
what waste do we not want?"
Bernice Johnston reported on the Cook-
ing for One workshop. Bernice and Stella
Tilbrook will demonstrate some recipes at
a time to be anfointced later.
Susan McNaughton was in charge of the
program and gave the topic about pollu-
tion, followed by a reading.
Marian McFarlane gave a reading per-
taining to the present day circumstances.
This poem was written many years ago, as
it was found among papers in a house that
was being dismantled. It was very ironic
how it pertained to the present.
Mrs. McFarlane was commentator for a
fashion show on pollution coming from Ch.
38 S.M.O.G. the face of the Future and Br-
inging the Smell of the Nation. The models
included Gravel Gertie, Miss Automobile,
Miss Plastic Garbage .Bag, Miss Carlota
Can Can, Miss Fertilizer, Miss 4 Slick,
Miss Poly Phosphate, Miss Cigy Boo. The
outfits were very original and one of a
kind.
