Dear Pat:
Mr. Fitt needs :no ,defnding, but the
roan is not alone in his role as reluctant
laundry room .attendant. I admire his
restraint, and good character for not
vanishing when you show up to handle the
bleaching chores. The conflict between
men and washing' machines Is as old as it is
widespread. It can be :explained thusly :
when tearing apart and/or repairing a
motor, each nut, may be and after, is
tightened to the accompaniment of four
letter words. The right volume and proper
cadence .of profanity can be therapeutic
for skinned knuckles. In winter time it is
consideredby to be a must. Carrying
on like .that yin the house can cause a reduc-
tion in the esteem received from one's
spouse.
I would like to suggest that washing
machines truly hate to be handled by a
man. A case in point: one model that could
only have been invented by Beelzebub's

could almost hear it snicker as I put in a
pailful or three of diapers, and as much
soap as .possible, whilestill following
directions. I closed the lid :and wandered

ours. First it began tobuck, tossing its lid,
soap and some of the contents to the four
corners of the room. Then it started to
dance, obviously pleased with its perfor-
mance and my reaction. (My wife HAD ex-
plained
xplained that a' vertical agitator, if not load-
ed right causes chaos. She has not been
more correct before or since.)
I entered the room, dodged a pirouette,
ducked a diaper and dove over the sink to
unplug it. I pushed it back to its place,
reset the load and started it up. It smiled. I
hovered close by ready to dismantle it if
the need or opportunity presented itself. It
didn't.
Upon conclusion of operations I opened
the lid tofind I'd been canned into thinking
I had tamed this beast of a machine. You
see, vertical agitators imitate the jaw ac-
tion of early land rnamtnals, thus it par -
tally devoured and then regurgitated
most of the diapers. The next scene wasn't
pretty. It resulted in a dozen bundles of
Pampers and my banishment from the
laundry room.
I truly was trying to help but I've only
been allowed back a couple of times since.
There IS a silver lining behind the cloud
after all.
Sincerely,
Kinloss 'Gentleman.
