protection agreement
Kinloss Council met for the regular
meeting in March by Reeve Barry
Johnston and all council members present.
A motion was passed authorizing the
reeve and the clerk to sign a Fire Protec-
tion Agreement between the Village of
Lucknow and the Townships of Ashfield
and West Wawanosh. The agreement will
be in effect for tenyears subject to written
notice of amendments.
It was decided that the sum of$12,000.00
should be included in the budget for 1989
for the purpose of paying the Township's
share toward the purchase of a new tanker
truck for the Lucknow and District Fire
Department.
The following quotes were accepted for
gravel for use on township roads for 1989.
"A" gravel for crushing for roads in the
south end of the township, Carman
Whytock 45 cents per cubic yard; "A"
gravel for crushing on roads in the north
end of the township, Fred Guest 60 cents
per cubic yard; "B" gravel for construc-
tion on concession 12 west Glen Haldenby
60 cents per cubic yard and "B" gravel for
eonstruetion lots 11 to 14 Trona Harold
Elliott•40 cents per cubic yard.
The road superintendent is authorized to
purchase bagged ;calcium chloride and
weed spray through Bruce County
Highways.
The road superintendent was instructed
to call for tenders for crushing, hauling
and spreading approximately 34,000 cubic
yards of "A" gravel on township roads and
for supplying and spreading gravel on
ratepayers private roads, for supplying
and applying approximately 140 flake ton-
nes of calcium chloride to be delivered at
the road superintendent's discretion and
for loading, hauling and spreading approx-
imately 28,000 cubic yards of pit run gravel
on the 12th concession west and on lots 11
to 14 concession 10. All tenders are to be in
to the road superintendent's office by 5:00
p.m. on April 14.
He is also instructed to advertise for
quotes on heavy machinery and truck ren-
tal for 1989, quotes to be in his office by
5:00 p.m. on April 14.
General accounts for $42,532.51 and road
accounts for $12,035.07 were approved.
BC lady visits in Whitechurch
Norma Rintoul, and Mr. and Mrs. Mac
Cardiff of Brussels visited recently with
Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Campbell and
Heather at Ancaster.
Shirley Smith from Salt Springs, British
Columbia, spent a few days with her
parents Mr. and Mrs. Russel Chapman.
World Day of Prayer washeld on March
3 in Chalmers Presbyterian church, with
19 ladies present. Rev. John Neilson was
guest speaker. Refreshments were en-
joyed at the close of the meeting.
Mr. and Mrs. Orland Irwin and family
moved to Wingham on the weekend.
• The community was saddened and
shocked Thursday morning to hear of the
sudden passing of Mrs. Jean Tiffin Of
Whit-chrrch, She will be greatly missed
b� ner many good neighbours and friends
in the community.
Whitechurch UCW
The Whitechurch UCW held their March
meeting in the home of Mr. Dave Gibb.
The topic was the church in society taken
by Alice Moore and Mildred McClenaghan
Alice gave the call to worship on being
content with what we have.
A hymn was read in unison and Mildred
McClenaghan read the scripture, followed
with prayer by Mrs. Moore. She also read
an article by Don Cornish who started the
Bible study called Bethel Bible series.
Mildred McClenaghan read from the
February observer of the award that
David Hallman received for his work on
his environment project of the earth's
ozone. He received a globe made from
recycled glass.
Mildred McClenaghan read from
general council that $10,000 had been given
to earthquake victims in Ermania.
" Rev. Neilson gave an account of Huron -
Perth Presbytery in Stratford in
February. .
Eleven answered the roll call with a
verse containing the word peace.
A thank you was read from Scott
Mission.
Donations were given to Ethiopia and
Mozambique.

Institute Meeting
The Whitechurch Womens' Institute held
their March meeting in the home of Mrs.
Gordon Wall in Wingham.
Helen Currie opened the meeting with a
reading. Roll call was answered by 14
ladies telling of their best holiday.
A Dessert Euchre will be held on April 24
at 1:30 p.m. in the hall.
Marjorie Wall. and Mary Hehn attended
the short course in Walkerton on February
27 for cooking for one, and will be teaching
it April 18 at 10 a.m. at -the home of .Mrs.
Wall for the institute members who are
interested.
The directors' meeting is to be held
March 28 in Tiverton.
Jean Ross was the convenor for the
Public Relations meeting and introduced
Margaret de Boer of Lucknow who is a
public health nurse for Huron County from
the Wingham office. She gave a very in-
teresting talk on osteoporosis, a disease of
the bones. The chief victims are women
over 50. In Canada today, approximately
800,000 such women are suffering recurr-
ing pain and disability as a result of this
disease. She told of the ways to get your
calcium and the right foods to eat.
Norma Rintoul thanked Margaret and
presented her with a gift of money of which
she turned back into the institute. Mrs.
Ross conducted a penny auction which net-
ted the institute the proceeds.

Whitechurch Knit Wits held their
meeting March 6 at the home of assistant
leader Betty Ross. Eight were present
with three ladies to help. Roll call was,
what roject are you doing? . Most are do-
ing be Each one did an increase and
decrease o their sampler. Some finished
and moved on to tension on their samplers.
WMS hosts Family night
Hostess to the South Kinloss WMS Fami-
ly Night on March 17was °Priscilla Ram-
say. She was also director as was Olive
Needham.
Special guest for the evening -was Joan
Mowbray with a slide presentation On her
family's stay in West Africa in the years
176 and 1987.
President, Wilma Clarke welcomed the
good crowd and opened the meeting with a
reading on sins. Many other old favourite
hymns interspersed the, meeting.
'The trio of:Rena Forster, Shirley Colwell
and Ruth Bell delighted all with•a number
entitled `Follow Close to Me'.
Bible Study was taken from Mark 14 vs
32. ,Mrs.:Ramsay very capably ,plained
the Jody .to t'rel; e. e_Lenten
Season icing upon us her me$sage was
wellreceived.
The various business matters were con-
ducted. It was notedthere were 55 in atten-
dance at the World Day of Prayer.
Nancy Maclntyre ,.gave a reading of
HelenSteiner Rice entitled, `In the Garden
of Gethsemane'. The offering followed
with Margaret Keith giving the offertory
prayer. 'Prayer Circle included Roely de
Boer, -Marion Campbell and Mary Davis.
Many well known proverbs were given
as answer to the roll call.
Courtesy remarks were .by „Mrs. Ram-
say. Wanda Keith lead in the closing
prayer.
All enjoyed Mrs. Mowbray's slides .and
her display pf African culture.
