Egg consumption forecast
Agriculture Canada is forecasting only a
modest decline in per capita egg consump-
tion in 1989 despite higher retail prices in
the first half of the year.
Domestic disappearance of table eggs is
predicted to decline 0.5% in 1989 with
similar declines in 1990. Producer prices
are expected to stabilize as the price of
feed grains and protein meal peak in early
1989, and to decline into the end of the year.
Ontarioproducerpricesfor Grade A Large
eggs will average 16:4% above year earlier
levels in the first and ;second quarter and
will close the year at 2.7% above 1988 year-
end prices. Assuming normal cropping
conditions in 1989 and 1990, producer
prices will remain below 1989 levels
throughout 1990.
The effects of the 2% national quota cut
. will .be partly Offset by continuing gains in
the rate sof lay resulting in a decline of
commercial egg gradings of about 1%. As
a result, egg .surpluses are projected to re-
main thesame to higher from the very
high levels of 1988. The costs of surplus
removalwill likely necessitate additional
quota cuts and/or higher surplus removal
levies in:1990.
Processed egg demand will continue its
rapid growth in the year ahead. The strong
consumer demand for processed. and con-
venience foods resulted in a 4.4% increase
in demand by egg processors in 1988. Pro -
cased egg disappearance is expected to
continue to rise at roughly 5% per year in
1989 and 1990, and processed egg exports
are forecasted to rise by as much as 10%
per year over the next two years. .
Although Agriculture Canada did not
make forecasts for 1989 imports or ex-
ports, both are expected to rise. Im-
plermntttien of the cane—U.S. Free
Trade Agreement will result .in a
negotiated increase in U.S. table egg im-
ports into Canada While shell egg exports
from Canada will continue to be negligible,
a continued growth in the. domestic pro-
cessing industry will likely result in an in-
crease in the export of processed egg
products.
