OMNR forestry services available for farmers
The Ontario Ministry of Natural
Resources (OMNR) offers a forestry ser-
vice to farmers and other rural
landowners.
This service is of interest to those who
have a hardwood bush, a white pine plan-
tation or idle land that could grow trees.
OMNR can increase the income from
your woodlot and make idle land produc-
tive and more attractive by planting trees.
Make Bush Produce
A young hardwood bush may be more
valuable than you think, particularly if it
contains species such as hard maple, white
ash, basswood, and black cherry.
You can do nothing and let it grow on its
own, or you can care for it like you do any
other farm crop.
Picture a vegetable garden planted and
then ignored until harvest time. The same
is true of a woodlot - trees repond to proper
care just as vegetables respond to proper
cultural practices.
Proper woodlot management is not dif-
ficult, and it can often double or triple the
growth rate of the trees to produce higher
profits. Just as you weed and thin a
vegetable garden, the low -value, crooked,
diseased and over -crowded trees in your
woodlot need to be eliminated to provide
more moisture, sunlight and nutrients for
the high-value "crop" trees.
Woodlot Improvement Service
If you are an owner of a woodlot of five
acres or more in size, that needs improve-
ment work to eliminate low value, non-
producti_ve trees, 'contact the staff a W _
NR. They can have the necessary work
done for you at no cost. With demand for
fuel wood increasing, it is often possible
for staff to improve a woodlot and still ob-
tain a small financial return for the Ian-

downer. The landowner is responsible for
taking normal precautions to protect the
woodlot from livestock and fire.
Make White Pine Plantation
More Valuable
The end product of white pine grown in
plantations will usually be sawlogs. The
—owner will obtain a greater profit if -his
product is suitable for the better grades of
lumber, but only wood that is free of knots
will produce high quality lumber.
Therefore, it is essential in white pine
plantations to remove all unnecessary side

branches by pruning as early as possible to
prevent the formation of numerous large
knots. The recommended practice is to
choose the best quality trees ("crop"
trees) and to remove the side branches
gradually to a height of 17 feet as the
"crop" trees increase in size.
White Pine Pruning Service
Owners of five acres or more of con-
iferous plantation containing white pine
trees over 15 feet tall and suitable for prun-
ing can contact OMNR staff, and at no cost
the staff will select "crop" trees to be
pruned and carry out the actual pruning
work.
The landowner is responsible for taking
normal precautions to protect the planta-
tion from livestock and fire.
Make Idle Acres Productive
If your farm has a few acres of land that
cannot be cultivated because they are too
steep or rocky, lack sufficient moisture or
nutrients, or too small for modern
machinery, consider making the land pro-
ductive and attractive with a new crop of
trees.
Reforesting these areas will provide
wood products, attract wildlife, protect
soil from erosion by wind or water, in-
crease the beauty of your farm, shelter
field crops, farm buildings and livestock
from wind.
Tree Planting Service
OMNR staff will, for owners of five acres
or more of suitable land, inspect the pro-
-phyto -be -planted, considerthe-objectives -
of the owner, offer advice on the proper
species to plant and carry out the actual
planting work.
The landowner is responsible for pur-
chasing the nursery stock at nominal cost
from the ministry nursery and for protec-
ting the young plantation from fire,
livestock, insects and disease.

Crop trees should not have: a. swollen
stems; b. seams or breaks in the bark; c.
n eebonfcal wounds cause by logging or
other equipment; d. poorly healed branch
stubs. All of these defects indicate internal
damage or disease. Such affected trees
and crooked trees are best removed for
firewood.
