Those words of advice to ffv ravers come from Don Taman, Head Miller at Robin Hood Multifood Inc. in Saskatoon. As head Miller for Robin Hood Multifood Inc., Taman is responsible for the entire oat milling production. The production process involves cleaning, hulling, con toning and flaking of the oats. "I would definitely recommend Certified seed because you will get a consistent crop in terms of quality and purity," he says. "And that means your end product will be more marketable." Gobind Sadaranganey echoes those same words. As Associate Director of Quality Control, Robin Hood Multifoods Inc. in Toronto, Ontario, Sadaranganey also understands the importance of quality seed. "There is a distinct advantage in using Certified seed because there is less risk of contamination from other crop or weed seeds," he says. "And you're assured of a uniform, high quality product." Both Taman and Sadaranganey say five factors are used as a guideline for judging the quality characteristics of oats. "We recommend farmers use these guidelines to improve their. crops and to ensure their samples meet milling requirements." Seed size - Uniformity in seed size is im- portant as well as the plumpness of the kernel•. The hull should represent 22 to 26% of the kernel and shouldn't exceed 30%. "If we know the kernel is plump and uniform, then we know the groat. will be similar," says Taman. "The groat, or in- terior of the oat seed, must be a good size because it makes good size oat flakes." Color - White or cream -colored oats are preferred to dark or tan -colored oats. The groat should also be white to cream color. "The lighter color is based on consumer preference for a bright oat flake," says Taman. Protein level - Millers prefer a moderate protein level of about 14 to 15%. "Although we are always looking for the best protein levels we can get, you have to go with the crop year," says Taman. "The last two crop years have been ideal for millers because protein levels have been very high The power line project from the Bruce Nuclear Power Plant to Yangwood — this picture shows the poles that erected at the sides of roads prior to the stringing of the line. Disease free - According to Sadafanganey, oat samples should be unwe :.:'• 'iered and show no signs of mildew, smnu+. b+ackpoint or other diseases. "Oat r+ lutes should also be rust resistant," he ss Purity - Oat samples must be free from weed seeds and foreign grain seeds. "Dif- ferent varieties of oats are certainly ac- ceptable but samples should be clean and pure to ensure a high quality product for milling," says Taman Following these guidelines will increase your chances of having oats accepted for milling, says Taman "And starting with Certified seed will ensure a quality .oat crop in terms of uniform kernel size, puri- ty and fewer weed seeds." 0877 2880 heat units • High yielding • Suitable for wide or narrow TOWS High pods with good shattenng resistance 9061 'NEW! 2650 teat units • High yielding. eacellent standability • Good podding height and shattering resistance • Clear hilum Conveniently applied as liquid or dry, 1174 reduces heating and protein breakdown, while improving palatability and silage quality ... all leading to improved livestock performance.
