Recent developments in the United
States may mean that cholesterol con-
scious consumers can enjjby their eggs in
the not -too -distant future.
The USDA is getting ready to re -write
the nutrient handbook which currently
lists the cholesterol content of large eggs
as 274 milligrams. Recent testing of eggs
has shown the cholesterol content to be
208-210 milligrams, or about 25 per cent
lower than current figures which were
established over 20 years ago. The lower
level of cholesterol in today's eggs is at-
tributed to the changes in genetics and
poultry nutrition which have' occurred
since eggs were last tested. USDA plans to
finish testing by this Spring, and will then
make a recommendation to lower current
figures for cholesterol in time for their 1989
printing. Once the USDA recommendation
is made, Agriculture Canada is expected
to undertake similar testing of Canadian
eggs.
Meanwhile, two separate endeavours to
produce a lower cholesterol egg, are cur-
rently underway in the U.S. Both efforts in-
volve feeding hens a patented feed supple-
ment, one containing kelp, the other con-
taining fish oil, which reduces the
cholesterol content of the eggs they lay by
as much as 33 per cent. USDA testing and
final approval is expected to take until the
end of 1989. In the meantime, a -Japanese
patented cholesterol -reducing egg is get-
ting ready to hit the supermarket shelves
in the U.S. These eggs which currently sell
in Japan for three times the price of
regular eggs, reduce the serum cholesterol
level in people who eat at least one a day.
In Canada, research is continuing on a
Canadian version of the lower cholesterol
egg, which uses a poultry feed supplement
made from Canadian grown Canola.
Referendum held for sheep producers
A mail -in referendum for producers of
sheep, lambs or wool will be held in April.
Producers will be asked to consider this
question for the referendum: "Do you sup-
port the continuation of the Ontario Sheep
Marketing Agency?"
By holding this referendum, the
ministry is fulfilling a recommendation of
the Ontario Sheep Commission . which
reported on the establishment and opera-
tion of an 'Ontario Sheep Marketing Agen-
-cyfor sheep-,--lambs-and-wool-in- 1984. That
recommendation stated that producers
should have the opportunity to call for a
vote on the continuation of the agency
after "a reasonable period of operation".
The agency was established in 1985,
without a producer vote.
Producers of sheep, lambs or wool are
eligible to vote in thereferendum if they
were a registered producer with the Sheep
Marketing Agency as of. Dec. 31, 1988 and if
they owned, produced and marketed
sheep, lambs or wool in 1988. They are also
eligible if they began producing in 1988'and
intend to begin marketing in 1989.
The mail -in referendum will be held
from April3-to-14, 198g._Watchfor th_e_infor-_
mation meeting in your area, which will
explain the marketing activities and ser-
vices provided to producers of sheep,
lambs and wool.
