But this isn't always the case, said Prof. Michael Troughton of the University of Western Ontario during a recent seminar held at the Huron County Pioneer Museum in Goderich. Many buildings which are valuable to modern society can be found at farmsteads — the actual home as well as barns or other farm buildings. Troughton has been researching and stu- dying Canadian architecture, with emphasis on agricultural communities, since he mov- ed to Canada about 20 years ago. When preserving farmstead buildings, people must first understand them and why the buildings should be preserved. Troughton said people must first recognize early and modern dwellings as well as understanding how these buildings fit into our society and changes which has occur- red and will continue to occur at the farmstead. The first dwellings that appeared were log cabins. But these are now rare and most times are found in conservation areas, he said. "The log cabin is the starting point. It's a key relic. Sometimes their presence (be- ing found) has been quite accidental. Today, same thing, they reappear with modern renovations," Troughton said. "In the case of the first farm buildings, they are even rarerThe farm_ buildin have usually been replaced." Areas where most log cabins have been found are in the Canadian Shield and the Bruce Pennisula. Throughout the seminar, Troughton brief- ed the audience, about 10 were in attendance — including LACAC members,- on the various changes in architecture and size of buildings and the change in farmers harvesting crops to raising livestock. As farmers became more wealthy, their homes began to change. One and a half storey Gothic cottages, which still exist, replaced the log cabins in the 1850s. A house of in the Gothic style still exists in Goderich Township, it was owned by Thomas M. Elliot, Troughton said. Through the 1850s to the 1870s, more and more farmers began to prosper and much of their money when into their houses, Verandahs began to appear as well as elegant designs. As livestock became the livelihood of many farmers in Huron County, cheese fac- tories began to spring up. There are still over 100 cheese factories that haven't been replaced, destroyed or abandoned. Also dur- ing these times of prosperity, churches and school `houses were built. Again, many still exist but exact numbers is not known. Changes in the farmstead have been go- ing on since then. Silos began to appear, farm buildings began to expand and grow until they became the most important feature to the farmstead. According to Troughton, most of the buildings have not been replaced, just fixed up and maintain- ed over the years. Today, on farms, people can see a mix- ture of old and new. Where a Gothic cottage sits, a modern barn for raising livestock can be seen or vice versa — modern homes mix- ed with old buildings. Troughton says once "you know how the bits and pieces fit s together," you can.enjoy the look of farm - T steads more and—appreciate what -they- of- fer to modern society. FARM FIRE LOSSES It is nearly impossible to have enough in- surance to cover all your losses in the event of a farm fire. A fire prevention check could help you avoid such losses. Check all buildings for fire hazards. Make sure ample water is available, and locate FOR THE BEST ...
