That's because the Roland, Man. farmer and seed grower has to meet strict regulations and growing standards to qualify as a Pedigreed seed grower. But Garlick doesn't mind. It's the foun- dation of his business. And it's the key to high quality crops for all farmers. "It's important to know the seed is pure and free from other crop varieties, off - types or weeds," says Garlick. "Seed in- spection assures me I have a high quality product that I can sell with confidence to my customers. The inspection process protects the com- mercial farmer as well as the seed grower, according to Garlick. "If a farmer wants to buy barley for malting purposes, pur- chasing Certified barley seed provides the assurance it's been inspected for varietal purity and performance you can count on." All fields grown with the intention of pro- ducing pedigreed seed must be inspected. Seed growers make application for crop in- spection to the Canadian Seed Growers' Association (CSGA), the official pedigree- ing agency in Canada. "The actual inspection is carried out by inspectors from Agriculture Canada, on behalf of the CSGA, says Jerry Roddy of Saskatoon, Sask. As Regional Program Of - liter of the Agriculture Inspection Direc- torate, Agriculture Canada, Roddy en- sures the inspection program are implemented. "We're responsible for ensuring all seed offered for sale in the marketplace adheres to the Canada Seeds Act and Regulations," he says. The Canada Seeds Act includes the establishment of grades for various classes of Pedigreed seed, depending on the crop. These classes are Foundation, Registered and Certified seed. Certified seed is recognized as the seed of com- merce. It's the class recommended for farm use to produce pure, even crop stands. Inspection Equals Quality Certified seed gives producers access to the highest yielding, top performing varieties. "Based on the strict inspection standards set for Pedigreed seed, farmers know they can depend on the performance of that seed," says Niels Hansen -Trip, Associate Director of Inspection and En- forcement for Agriculture Canada in Ot- tawa, Ont. Once the seed grower makes application for inspection, an inspector checks to en- sure the seed grower has planted and managed the crop according to CSGA regulations for growing pedigreed crops. The inspector's primary responsibility is to record accurate information describing the crop at the time of inspection. Details include variety, crop kind, number of acres planted and the crop location. The seed grower must verify that a pedigreed class of seed was sown by presenting the official Seed Sealing Tags. "The inspector examines the field for weedy conditions, the presence of other varieties, off -types and other crop kinds," says Hensen -Trip. "They also report on the isolation of the field so that the CSGA Turn to page 21 • HEAT & COOL YOUR HOME WITH DOWN TO EARTH PRICES The WaterFurnace System captures the tremendous. reserve of underground energy and transfers it into your home.
