Is your mouth watering fora fresh,
plump, sweet fragaria or tubus? Yes?
Well, with the coming of June, Morrison
Ferries, located just east of Lucknow, will
have 'an abundance of luscious strawber-
ries and raspberries to satisfy your
craving.
Morrison Berries began operating in
1985 with the first harvest .being picked h
1966. Originally three acres of strawber-
ries and one acre of raspberries was\
planted. The family run business has en-
panded gradually, with the 1989 season in-
cluding nine acres of strawberries and
four acres of raspberries.
Berry farming is a "labour intensive"
.business, said Ralph, "and if it wasn't for
the family and availability of help, we
would be unable to expand. In 1 dad
(Gordon) worked with us, as well as three
people in the booth and between 10 and 12
pickers."
The family running the business in-
cludes Roger and his wife Vicky, Ralph
and wifeSandra.
In addition to running the berry farm,
they all have other employment; Roger at
UCO Winghain Feed Plant; Vicky has her
own business, .Fasting Impressions; Ralph
at Lucknow Co-op and Sandra, is a phar-
macy technician at 'Winghain fIosit fl.
Roger and Vicky have two young children,
Blair and Stephanie.
They also finish appy-oximately 175 head
of beef cattle and work about 350 acres of
land, with assistance from their brother,
Lloyd; father, Gordon and their uncle,
Mel.
One would have to believe that the Mor-
risons certainly 'wouldn't have a lot of
spare time for extra curricular activities.
Ralph said a school trip to the United
States, where he and Roger toured a berry
operation, along with the fact that Vicky's
family was in the business, led them to the
decision to initiate their "Pick Your Own"
set up.
The Morrisons plant Viestar and Red-
coat strawberries, which .are the most
popular variety, along withKent, which is
a later variety. Their raspberries are
Comet.
Following the setting of the stawberey
plants, the flowers are picked off. The
Morrisons have found this practice
generates twice the number of runners.
The runners will seed themselves down
and the strawberry propagates -readily
