day as eight teams of six and seven year This win placed the Pirates in the chain -
old Tyke hockey players converged for the
Lucknow Legion Branch 309 Annual Tyke
Tournament. The teams came from Blyth,
Howick, Teeswater, Ripley, Brussels,
Huron Township, Belgrave and Lucknow.
The Lucknow Pirates had the opening
game against Teeswater whom they had
met twice before in exhibition play which
resulted in a 2-2 tie and 2-1 Lucknow
victory.
Teeswater took an early lead scoring on
the first shift, but the Pirates' Jeff Andrew
tied the score up on a goal from Conor
McDonagh.
The favour was returned on the same
shift as McDonagh gave the Pirates the
lead with .assists from Andrew ani' J sor
Pentland.
That was all the scoring for the first
pperiod and it was well into the second
period before John VanDiepenbeek pinch-
ed in from the defense position and put
McDonagh's rebound in for a 3-1 {lead.
At that ,point the Stanley brothers took
over with Mark .Stanley scoring an
unassisted goal and-Brian'Stanley scoring
on .,an .:assist from Michael Wyndham
around two Teeswatergoals.
With the final score 5.3 in ,the Lucknow
Pirates' favour they went in •the Cham-
pionship side .while Teeswater advanced to
the Consolation side.
Their second game was against a very
strong Huron Township team who came
out big taking a 2-0 lead at the ..end of the
first period. Only the stronggoaltending of
Lucknow's Adam Cameron and the cons-
tant attacking by Mark Stanley kept the
Pirates close.and they were able:totie:it .up
2-2.'Both goals werescored by Stanley with
assists from Wyndham.
A late goal by Huron Township with 20
seconds left in the second period gave
them back' the lead.
The Pirates, knowing their backs were
against the wall, came out firing in the
third period with all three lines going on
the offensive. The very first shift produced
a goal as Aaron Bakker took Luke Skip-
per's pass from behind the.net:and Jamul -
ed itintothe corner.totie ;it up.at..3-3. Play
was constantly back ,and forth with,,
Cameron turning aside all .atten)Ipts by
Huron Township. The Pirates took the lead
for the first time in the game when
McDonagh swept Andrew's rebound past
the sprawled goaltender. Lucknow con-
tinued to apply the pressure, but a break
away by Huron Township's DarrinSrnegal
netted the score up to 44-4 as he put his third
goal of the game past Cameron.
As the game ended in a 4-4 tie the tourna-
ment rules dictate a shoot out take place
with each team sending five .players in
against the opposing .goaltender. ,Each
team's :first two shooters were successful,
butthen Cameron took-overandturned the
final twee 'Huron shooters aside. Lucknow
was successful :with four of their five
shooters scoring -and :took the :hard fought
game .&6. The Pirates' scorers were M.
pionship final against a strong Belgrave
team. Belgrave had only allowed one goal
in their previous two games and came out
strong taking an early 2-0 lead before the
Pirates' M. Stanley notched his fifth goal
of the day on assists from Jordan Hamilton
and Wyndham late in the first period.
The second period remained scoreless
and the two teams took a well deserved
rest with the score 2-1 in Belgrave's
favour.
Although Lucknow started carrying the
play early in the third period, good
goaltending by Belgrave held them off the
sheet and they added two more for a 4-1
lead .before Andrew scored on McDonagh's
rebound.
With the score 4-2 late in the third period
the Pirates desperately tried to put one
past the Beigrave goalie, but were
repeatedly turned aside and Belgrave's
Peter Irwin broke away to give his team a
5-2 lead.
Having " tried their best, but knowing
that they were beat, fatigue thensetin and
Belgrave scored three more in the last two
minutes to take a well deserved &2 victory
and the championship trophy.
Belgrave's Peter" Irwin, who scored six
of his team's goals in the last game, ac-
ceptedthe trophyfromthe Legion's Henry
Clark. Lueknow was championship
runner-up which follows on the heels of last
year's consolation runner-up award.
The Blyth Tykes won a close 5-3 match
over Ripleyto take the Consolation .trophy.
