Farmers, it would appear f' .11'11'1i.f licensing of BST for use in dairy tattle. They believe that ..using_the hormone will •destroy mBk's image .as "nature's most nearly -perfect fond." This worry is well founded. in British Columbia, when it becamepublic that a certain dairy weans- ingmillefrom a BSTtest herd, therewas a spontaneous boycott of 'productsfrom that facility. It seems that in the consmner vocabulary the words "hormone" and 4132ffir , when mixed, produce -"poison". The deeper fear for people who make their living on.dairyfarms is what this new 'drug -will to to the cows. Even minor side effects would have huge implications, because inthis business, unlike beef, pork dr poultry, longevity is a major concern. The suggestion that we can .artificially raise the level of a certain hormone over a long period of time, -without side effects, •strikes the man who -milks cows ramming and night as sheer madness. The -r-esear- chers :have been tightlipped about this side of their:work pnblicizingthe produc, tionincreasesuchievedbutsayinguothing aboutthe healthafthe cow. Whilerumom-s of horror stories abound, -the first Teal evidence has leaked out almost.by acci- dent. -Ixperiments conduCted .at the University Of Guelphimbeetrattleshowed that the livers, kidneys and lungs of BST .treated ;treated mettle were All con- siderably _larger than normal. Obviously, a large majority of people, in this rase dairy farmers end consumers do not -trust :the reguipting agencies to- protect us from rodocts-that-wc-Almet-meed, Thevildespread sentiment, based on a long list of thingsthat were "proven safe" and are now banned, is -that the powerful com- panies who stand to make millions from the sale of new products will get them pushed through one .way or another. The second question hinges on. the out- come of the first. "Who should decide .on whether or not to introduce new technology? If BST is going to profoundly affect the dairy industry, then .sbouldn't the farmer have something to say? Ap- parently not, say the, experts, 'PST is corning and 30% of you -will have to leave." That kind of arrogance, based on the muddle-headed warship, of efficiency, needs to be challenged:Dairy farmers.can do all of agriculture a greatfavour by.stan- ding up right now saying, "Well decide what's best for our own -future!"
